Thinking about making the trip and wondered if others are going. Locale hasn't been announced but imagine it will be field-turfed Saprissa.

I wish the hell my kid's school let out before the 20th of June. Answer - no. Next cycle, there will be no children left at home and I will be able to travel on my schedule (or FIFA's).

It will likely be at Saprissa but the new national stadium that is being built in the big park west of downtown (funded and built by the Chinese government) is supposed to be finished in May.

Wikapedia says the new stadium won't be finished until Nov. 2010 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estadio_Nacional_de_Costa_Rica. It's too bad it's not sooner. Field turf has its place with high use rec and youngers club soccer, but at the higher levels, it's gotta be grass.

I went down for the qualifier back in October 2005.

Even though the US lost the game, it was still a great experience. The Costa Rican fans are really incredible. And... Costa Rica is such a beautiful country.... mountains, rain forests, volcanoes, scuba diving and more.

I rented a car (Daihatsu Terios 4x4) and traveled around the country visiting Monteverde, Arenal, and Playas del Coco.

I am seriously considering going back for the game in August.

Here are some pictures that I took from back in October:

In San Jose, I stayed at a very nice B&B called the Aranjuez Hotel:

I have more info about where I stayed and visited, if anyone is interested.

Myself and my friend will most likely be heading down there for five or six days. We'll know for sure by the end of the month.

My wife and I will be celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary on June 3rd.

We're thinking of doing so at Estadio Saprissa. :D

My girlfriend and I are thinking of going down for the week (returning in time for Chicago, of course.)

If anyone has any tips on a nice resort to stay at -- and for a hotel in San Jose, I'd love to hear 'em.

    Thanks,
    Robert in Detroit.

Sign me up! I am not sure how to go about this though considering that I will be missing work for the USA versus Italy match a week and a half later in Pretoria, South Africa.

well if you remember what the turf at Saprissa was like prior to the fieldturf installation, I'm not sure that going back to Grass would be an improvement.

I'm going. My biggest question is how the hell can I get tickets? Anyone have any info?

Also, I'll be in Costa Rica for about 10 or 11 days and I'm planning to travel all over the place. Law5guy, if you have any suggestions on what to see/do, I'd love to hear 'em.

If my wife and I go, it will be for a week. Does anyone know which is better, Atlantic or Pacific coast?

We might also head home via Chicago.

Slightly off topic here, but why on earth is China building their stadium?

I haven't done extensive research yet, but it seems like there isn't much of anything on the Caribbean coast. The Pacific coast seems to be where all of the tourist attractions are, anyway. Not sure where the best surf spots are, but I would assume also on the Pacific coast. Guanacaste and Puntarenas are on the coast, and Arenal is northwest of San Jose, inland but still closer to the Pacific coast. The major volcanoes (and national parks?) seem to be located between San Jose and Arenal. I've found basically no info at all about places to go to in the eastern half of Costa Rica.

That hotel law5guy linked to seems pretty nice, and pretty cheap. For two people, $40/night for bed and breakfast? Not bad at all.

Yeah, if there's enough people thinking about going, you can do NY to SJO to Chicago to NY for about $ 430, which is crackhead prices.

My buddy and I are in for the costa rica trip, and we want to fly straight to Chicago, but that part of the trip all depends on airfare from San Jose to Chicago.

How long is everyone planning on staying in Costa Rica? We're looking at a 6 day trip.

Since I'm going to Mex City too, looking 3 to 4 days.

In on the 2nd and out on the 4th or 5th.
