Antigua & Barbuda National Football Team also known as The Benna Boys, named after a local genre of a music, face one of the biggest football matches in its nation’s history on Sep. 7 against Guatemala.
A team compromised of players that play in its local premier league and players that ply their trade in the UK, are now considered by many to be one of the Caribbean Football Unions (CFU) most competitive team. The Benna Boys last world cup qualifier on June 12 came to a disappointing 0-0 draw with Jamaica. Although Antigua is known for its fast and aggressive style of play, they dominated their Caribbean rival only failing to finishing on several goals. The team also lacks on its wing play, which is hindering them from distributing the ball to their key strikers; Peter Byers and Dexter Blackstock of Nottingham Forrest (England). The middle of the field is controlled by #8 Mikele Leigertwood who currently plays for Reading FC in the English Premier league. Star Striker Peter ‘Big Pete’ Byers recently stated, “We are training hard currently, and will come out victorious as we are going for the win”.

Coach Tom Curtis made several new recent call ups: Lee Peltier (Leeds/England), Myles Weston (Gillingham/England), James Walker (Eastbourne/England), Moses Ashikodi (Ebbsfleet/England), Zaine Francis-Angol (Motherwell/Scotland). Tom Curtis will see a much more involved midfield with these recent additions, as they are the key to patching the hole that the team had from the previous qualifiers.

With these new additions, Guatemala will have to fight to stay alive in their intimidating ‘Estadio Mateo Flores’, stadium with a capacity of 30,000. For many of the Benna Boys this will be the largest crowd they have yet to play in front of. Antigua will have an advantage of speed over the Guatemalans, who will be attacking Antigua’s defense from the blow of the whistle. Antigua though is suffering a loss of two key defenders for this match, Marc Joseph who is currently on a one game suspension due to two yellow cards from previous qualifiers, and Marvin McCoy is out due to a recent broken leg. Tom Curtis must find a plan in order to keep his defense together as they were against Jamaica.

Guatemala hosts Antigua & Barbuda Fri. Sep 7 at 10PM EST. Then the two teams will play again in Antigua on Tue. Sep 11 at 7PM EST. Both teams looking to leave with a must needed 6 points.
