Merz is head of the Atlantic Bridge. If the term chancellor of the Allies was ever applicable then definitely on him
Hah...I remember back in Nov '05 when Angie assumed her post. I said then she would never last! I'm psychotic psychic like that.

If AKK wins, Merkel can continue for a few months, then AKK will take over running in snap elections in which CDU will likely lose cause she is considered a mini Merkel. If Merz wins Merkel will be kicked out in a matter of weeks and CDU will likely win the following snap elections. For CDU delegates it is a course decision between a socially conservative but economically left AKK and a economic liberal Merz. AKK is loved amongst party folks but will likely lose the next election. Merz is considered "cold" for certain parts of the party but could win back voters from Greens and AfD. Watching the first CDU leadership debate in Lübeck and I could not be more struck by the contrast with Britain. All three candidates are frank, thoughtful, courteous to their rivals, and develop each other’s points. Wonderful use of the sort-of-English-word 'shitstorm' by the Chancellor https://t.co/35O8xnaSjz— Bojan Pancevski (@bopanc) December 4, 2018
Wolfgang Schäuble has come forward supporting Merz. Press calls it a "game changer". Before chances where considered 50% Merz vs 50% AKK
This is happening 200m from my house at Hamburg Messe I might head down with my Ozil Raus signs to protest
To threadjack for a moment I watched the end of Deutschland 86 last night. No Angela the chemist showed up. The series was great (though the Libyan portion was weird). I loved how the Cuban American embassy official who may be in the CIA was living next door to the Stasi agent.
Merkel (Maxi, not mini) is still Chancellor, though I doubt she lasts until the end of her mandate. She will want to make tough decisions now, and step down at some point (maybe about a year before the next election) in order to allow AKK to fight the election as Chancellor. Given the uncertainty in Germany, Europe and the world, you cannot blame the CDU for making a safe, moderate choice. After all, this is a party whose slogan in the 1957 election was "Keine Experimente!" Keine Experimente It will be interesting to see who stakes the claim as "leader of the free world". Trump does not want it (and no one wants to give it to him) and Merkel will be giving it up. Macron is damaged by the riots, but he clearly wants that title (and the bien pensant class sees him as Merkel's natural successor).
