It's interesting how desperate the UK media is to present this as a disaster nonetheless However it's clear that SPD has navigated some treacherous waters and now has a decent chance to rebuild with the focus now off Federal elections for a couple of years Lots will depend on how the new face of leadership stacks up, and how well the party can use its recent soul searching to energise at state level. I think the big losers are FDP who really showed they are not ready to govern.
Nope. I am using European lefty markers. The first and foremost indication of a lefty European country is tolerance -- support for all. The attack on the left comes from those who believe otherwise, either because of an unwillingness to pay taxes (traditional conservatives) or xenophobia (AFD).
AfD by its party platform isnt more xenophobic than Merkel's CDU or FDP. And "support for all" is a thing of universal liberalism - the opposite of European leftism in its admiration for the state and the people. The European welfare state always defined itself about race and ethnicity. That is why long time not immigration countries like Scandinaviastan and Germany have built a welfare states, and multi-ethnic immigration countries like Canada and the USA havent.
Pretty decent yes vote share. https://www.economist.com/blogs/kaffeeklatsch/2018/03/merkel-goes-fourth
It's actually abysmal for a governing party to have 1/3 of party members -not just voters- not actually wanting to govern. The most popular politician is also the foreign minister and then the German president - there are parts in eastern Germany where they would hang Ange if they could get to her.
I think that's the key point really. The politicians have a responsibility to govern We've seen what happens in the US once that skill gets lost and freedom caucus is focussed all the time on political sabotage rather than getting anything done.
Personally I think there is a lot of potential upside for SPD if they manage it well. At a superficial level, Martin Scholz's plan to go into opposition and fix the party seems clever - blaming all the problems on GroKo and Merkel's centrist capture. But the real risk of that strategy was drifting even further into irrelevance. And we sure have seen in other western countries that it can be a decade in the wilderness for the left. SPD's real problem was a lack of a leadership that can make any of their messages stick. So now they will have a new leader, but they also have Olaf Scholz in the finance ministry with a chance to deliver actual SPD policy (though admittedly he is fiscally conservative for SPD). In the meantime they can get back to focussing on state politics which are obviously critical, at a time when the national membership is very engaged. So its not all bad news if the leadership can deliver and especially build personal brands at national level - I think Olaf Scholz is absolutely key to this. Of course there are big risks, but I never bought into the idea that opposition was going to fix what troubles SPD

They got women, they got Bavarians - what do you want more? Spahn is the next big thing coming out of the CDU. Big possible chancellor candidate. And Ange gave him Gesundheit which is a difficult ministry and that could piss a lot people off in case Spahn makes some mistakes
So Gerd Mueller is now part of the cabinet as the Entwicklungsmeister? I used to have a pair of his boots back in the day. Nice to see he's been able to make a seamless career change.
Well she isnt a real minister but the new government can offer Bayern + woman: Dorothee Bär, CSU, State Minister for Digitization
I love Bavarians and Munich is my favorite city in Germany. I have been trying to convince my wife to wear a dirndl for a while but she refuses. Her dad came from the Mosel valley and he used to dress her up in their local dress when she was a kid. She has tried to destroy all evidence of this but I have seen pictures. She says she wore enough traditional dress for a lifetime.
