There isn't really anything the KNVB can do to restrict EU players (which I assume Novakovich would count as) in favour of young dutch players due to European employment law. Novakovich as a player from the reserves of a Championship side like Reading would not be on 400K euros pa.
As I said the minimum wage doesnot apply if he has that EU passport. My comment was for the non EU situation with loans.

He needs to put a bulge in the auld onion at the pro level finally to have confidence he'll do it again and again. That I think is the issue right not. Last game I read the play-by-play and he was knocking at the door repeatedly but couldn't crash it in. Things went similarly at the start of the Cheltenham loan where he hit the bar and was close a couple times in the first game there, but didn't score. The ability is there, but often times if you don't make that good first impression to yourself and others, the pressure builds and builds, you start to question yourself, and you may not realize that potential. The mental game, and I don't mean the understanding, is such a big part of success or failure I think gets overlooked a lot of times like these guys are robots. Among the guys who've shown enough to get signed by a club of any note, it may be more important than sheer ability. It's not a coincidence Dempsey is the guy who has had the best career of any American in Europe. IMO he's not among the most talented between his lack of athleticism and moves. But he always had a chip on his shoulder, to keep putting himself in positions to achieve relative success.
It's one game in which he got an assist. Wasn't he banging them in all preseason? I can't recall failing to score for any stretch ever being a problem for him at Reading.
He's played 7 senior games now without putting one at the net. Had that stint at Cheltenham I mentioned where he was close multiple times in the first game but then didn't score in his time there. Pressure builds for many goalscorers and prospects trying to become proven players. That's the psychology of (the) sport. It's not a criticism. So it didn't warrant a defense. Just want to see him bang home a couple before too long at the senior level, so it should be more about ability than psychology (at least in this stop). I have little doubt he possesses the former. The latter - that remains to be seen.
I didn't offer a defense of Novakovich, more implying that from my perspective given the history and surrounding context, I don't see reason for concern just because he didn't score in one match. I'm also not concerned about him not scoring in the one month he spent playing for a team that wasn't even in the Football League almost two years ago. He scored in droves in the PL2/U23 before and after that loan stint, and its a higher level than the National League. His greater body of work suggest that finding the back of the net is not a problem for him. He just scored consistently through preseason, let's give him more than one opportunity to show he can or can't score in the Eerste Divisie.
