Because that's impossible to have a good game during poor season?

There's a lot of good stuff from him in that game highlight. One touch outlet to a teammate with the outside of his foot, another good hold-up for the outlet again on the cross that prompted the own goal, a step over outside of the foot dribble to the end-line for a short cross but there was no teammate in the box, nice turn and shot then quick reaction for another on the rebound. He always impresses with the skill he displays, especially for a tall fella.

He's not basing it off that one game. Novakovich has been in really good form for quite a while now. It seemed like he was scoring a goal a game.

People just following this thread know that. There's been a long clamor for his call-up to the first team and assertion it was another referendum of the English integration system that it didn't happen. So Doyle indeed was talking about of his ass in this case.

Don't try to re-frame this. Doyle is an MLS company guy masquerading as an objective analyst. He is dishonest and is overly harsh on non-MLS guys while he gives passes to MLS products. He could do so much better because he does know some soccer but has chosen to keep his employers happy to the detriment of the naive fans who rely on his articles for analysis. He's chosen to be a propaganda dispenser.

Soooo, what are you insinuating? Since he hasn't been playing with the first team, he's had a bad season? Or, simply, that you don't follow youth players?

I don't follow players on those kind of teams. He isn't that young. USL is full of players of that age and younger. If he can't get to the bench of Championship team he didn't have a good season.

You think USL is comparable to a Championship team that is in contention for promotion to the Premier League? Wow. Anyways, it's not just up to him to play with the first team. The kid has scored a goal a game since the turn of the new year, not too much else he could do.

He isn't on Reading. He is on U-23 and a his contract expiring in a month. Apparently Reading people agree with Doyle.

I don't think that was the comparison, rather u-23 to usl.

But it's way too much of a rigid mindset - see Lletget. He was a standout for a youth team of a club that was in the Championship for a period, but they just wouldn't promote him no matter what he did. Then he went on to success in MLS/for the senior nt in his brief opportunities. And Lletget was significantly older than Novakovich by the end.

No, you can't do any more than perform in your opportunities, which he has done. The rest is at the discretion of the manager in a system that is very stingy about giving players first team opportunities. Doyle and you seem very ignorant about this. And he was referring to his youth season. So that's just a flat out false assessment. You're moving the goal posts.

What goal posts? If Reading liked him they would re sign him. They didn't. It means he didn't have a good season by their standards. Probably they are as ignorant as Doyle and I.

Doyle's knowledge of non-MLS players is absolutely atrocious. It's blatantly obvious he doesn't watch any of them.

I trust he was told he'd get game opportunities finally before signing this. Although it wouldn't come the rest of this season in their battle to get promoted, of course. But in friendlies and then early season, regardless if they join the Premier League, before rosters are completely put together.

He at least deserves the shot that Gooch got this season (that's not why Sunderland were ultimately demoted). Otherwise he's sabotaging himself, because he doesn't have full control whether he gets this opportunity. All he can keep doing is performing, which he is.

"Andrija Novakovich topped our goalscoring charts when he signed off with his 16th goal of the season". That hasn't been enough so far, and eventually he has to get bored playing with the youth team at his age, tenure, and success.

Good and satisfying aren't mutually inclusive. You can be having a good season but not a satisfying one. That was the case with Novakovich.

I couldn't tell you whether EPB is having a good season in the usl, and I doubt you could either. The games are lightly viewed and a defensive-oriented player doesn't have stats to compensate for that like a forward.

The implication of assessing Novakovich wasn't having a good season of course was he was a poor player undeserving of a significant Championship or MLS opportunity. You can't conclude that from his performances. In reality, the opposite is true. So in the spirit of a good season, Novakovich had one. Can't do more than he did. Now the responsibility is on Reading to translate that into a bigger role.

seems to work pretty well overall. obviously club-dependent variation, and we're going to notice our guys that get stuck in more than most. and of course Lletget is going to stand as a permanent exhibit here that the system doesn't work.
