The Galaxy lost last year because the team did not play team defense. The entire team must defend (with maybe the exception of Keane). This year will be the same issue. If only 6 7 or players defend this is going to be the same issue this year.
Defense was definitely the problem. We were the highest scoring team (56 goals) in the WC and it wasn't very close. We outscored FCD, VAN, POR, SEA, and SKC by 4, 11, 15, 12, and 8 goals respectively. Unfortunately our 46 goals allowed was also in first place for all those teams. Even last place COL allowed fewer goals than we did.
If we don't walk away with at least one piece of hardware this year from any of the tournaments that matter, then the season is a bust, even if we make it to the MLS Cup Final. Gerrard needs at minimum an MLS Cup to be able end his career saying he won at least one league title in at least one country. The Shield is a consolation prize for him at this point. LA as a team must at minimum win the Open Cup as far as I am concerned.
We stand on the precipice of glory. Delivering an MLS Cup in Gerrard's final year would be huge. Like Landon in 2014, it HAS to happen. The universe must bend toward this ultimate outcome.
The mechanisms may not allow it every year, but I sure as hell can expect it. That's my bar for this team (pending off season activity). A couple of weeks ago I would have laughed at this. Now, yes please.
