Anyone know of Americans currently signed to first division clubs? I've been lead to believe that Begium has fewer restrictions on non-EU players so I'd think that there be at least some players in the top league.
Well the first name that comes to my mind is Ogushi "Goosh" Onyewu that played las year for La Louviere and now for Standard de Liege.I think there is still another one in Antwerp (2nd division) (not sure he is still playing there)but I can't remember is name.I know he has an asiatic name (Lee ?).
Alex Yi came back to the US. The Belgian restriction is a minimum salary of €75,000 Euro salary. That's it, pretty easy - but the tricky part is finding an agent with connections to Belgian clubs to get you in the door.
Shouldn't be too hard. You can even sell them to Feyenoord and let them play for Westerlo for a year or two. I think there are no other Americans in first division, but it would be a nice idea to get some in.
Trust me, harder than you think. Plus the Eredivisie minimum salary is €400,000, so that's a bit of coin, so you better be able to play right away. With Gooch doing well, I expect a few others to test the waters.

If Feyenoord buys him, they can bring him to Westerlo immediately, and Westerlo pays his salary. Then, if he's good enough they can get him back because they work together.
Most never returned the call. the few I spoke to didn't care about American players. There is one agent who is looking to the US, but so many Americans want the glitz of the big clubs. Very sad, and little forethought on their part.
If they are Beasley quality, that shouldn't be a problem. But you're right, and the best example is Gooch Onyewu, going to a little team like La Louviere (with the crappiest changing and player rooms) now playing for Standard, and if he keeps making progress, he might end up in France again. Are you actually a manager, or is it merely hobby you're doing this?
I would think that at €75,000 there would be at least a couple Americans. Also, it would seem that 1st Division would be a good entry point into Europe with an opportunity to move from there to the bigger leagues. I didn't realize Holland was so high. Do you know what the minimum salary is in the French and Spainish first divisions for non-EU players?
Panic's job is a secret , but if you promise not to tell anyone he may tell you in an email what he does. I don't even know half of his job.
My son had tests in Belguim twice this last year. We were were told that the 75,000 euro was a take home pay scale. That it was a four year deal. If you didn't work out, they still had to pay you as long as you didn't quit. They can sign EU players for 30,000 & one year deals. He went to four clubs in southern Belguim. He played strong and the coaches wanted him. But they couldn't get the needed money. One of the clubs sold their best player just to keep afloat. We talked to quite a few people who said that the Belguim clubs had contract problems from the past few years. That they had paid dearly for internationals who were now "just collecting their checks". Also you need to speak French, They don't care for english. Some of the players speak english and french, But they would tell you the wrong thing just to mess you up. During the training my son was told one thing by the other player. He made sure that he got in the middle of the line, and watched the drill. He then saw that the player had mislead him. Other times the player would say two touch when it was one touch etc. If you plan go to southern Belguim make sure you speak French.
I guess the players were just affraid to lose their position in the team. Perhaps he would have been better off in the north of Belgium, where more people speak English. Did he train in first division teams?
What do you know about why Alex Yi left Antwerp? While there is lots of speculation about where he'll end up in MLS I haven't seen any postings that even hint as to why he came back. My thinking is that it can't be for the money so there must be other reasons. How successful was Yi at Antwerp?
I don't think Alex had a breakthrough with Antwerp. They probably couldn't justify his salary and offered him a lower amount..maybe close to the minimum for a foreigner. Maybe he is finishing school or starting medical school?
Yes, he's the man for Standard. I think he's one of the club's favorite players, and yes - Feyenoord knows about him.
