According Placar, this is the best XI for WC'70 elected by journalists from 39 countries. Banks - Dobias, Shesternev, Moore, Cooper - Beckenbauer, Gerson, Rivelino - Jairzinho, Tostao, Pele
Interesting that Carlos Alberto doesn't make it, given that his reputation is mainly built on that tournament.
Do you know by who it was organized? In another thread I posted this: https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/...l-advanced-stats.1979881/page-5#post-26961862 That are different teams as yours.
Sorry, if i don't posted in the correct thread. Like Comme said, the 1st thing that called my attention was the inclusion of Dobias x C.Alberto. It was a collection called "A Saga da Jules Rimet. A historia das Copas de 1930 a 1970" by Max Gehringer, published by Placar. In the magazine doesn't said whom organized the election. The team was similar to DPA.
The Placar, soon after the World Cup, made a all star team of the World Cup with only the votes of Placar journalists. Mazurkiewicz (Uruguai); Carlos Alberto (Brasil), Anchetta (Uruguai), Bobby Moore (Inglaterra), Everaldo (Brasil); Clodoaldo (Brasil), Beckenbauer (Alemanha) e Gerson (Brasil); Jairzinho (Brasil), Tostão (Brasil) e Pelé (Brasil)
Also according to the Spanish newspaper of La Prensa in New York, reporters from The Associated Press picked this starting 1990 World Cup team: Conejo, Brehme, Des Walker, Baresi, Jorginho, Scifo, Matthaus, Maradona, Michel, Schillaci, Klinsmann. Roger Milla was the only unanimous choice for being a sub on the bench. Other players mentioned were Shilton, Ferri, Stojkovic, Skuhravy, Makanaky and Lacatus. [Taken from my personal archive]
Goycochea; Tataw, Baresi, Buchwald, Brehme; Hassler, Matthaus, Gascoigne, Maradona; Schillaci, Milla. Team of World Cup 1900 according with the brazilian Revista Placar (13/07/1990). There isn't information on how many and which journalists voted. There aren't notes.
The NYC based Diario La Prensa had something like this: Goycoechea Bergomi-Baresi-Ruggieri-Brehme Matthaus-Rincon-Gascoigne-Maradona Milla-Schillacci
I also had the 1st team, and i've been confused, since i had the ratings for all matches. So, i calculated by myself and posted (Ranking based on ratings players) like unnoficial.
I am not so crazy would those ratings as they varied very much from one source to another? So who you should pick and base from?
In the Best XI (page in blue) it could be read: This is the all star team, one for each position and lining up in a 4-4-2, chosed by the journalist group sent by EL GRAFICO. In next page, it will be explained why were picked those players.... So, it doesn't mention that Team-A not even Team-B were selected for their average ratings.
Press agency DPA had this for the 1962 World Cup: World team: Schroif; Djalma Santos, Schnellinger; Zito, Maldini, Masopust; Garrincha, Toro, Vava, Tichy, Leonel Sanchez Europe team: Schroif; Durkovic, Schnellinger; Solymosy, Maldini, Masopust; Sandor, Scherer, Seeler, Galic, Charlton The Italian Corriere dello Sport came to a slightly different team (with some national bias): Schroif; Djalma Santos, Schnellinger; Zito, Maldini, Flowers; Garrincha, Sekularec, Albert, Amarildo, Charlton Poll about the 34 best players of the world had 6 Italians, 5 Brazilians and 3 Czechoslovakians (other nations had less than 3) so some national bias. As addition: Before the 1970 World Cup started, the British magazine "World Sports" had a poll. 80 journalists from 35 different countries (did not specify further) were asked to make an all-time team. Number of votes in parentheses (maximum is 80, to make that clear...). Yashin (69), Djalma Santos (57), Facchetti (38), Bozsik (45), Wright (38), Beckenbauer (44), Matthews (40), Pele (76), Di Stefano (68), Puskas (44), Charlton (37) The reserves team was (with 'unlucky' ones to miss out): Banks, Nilton Santos, Schnellinger, Masopust, Ocwirk, Moore, Garrincha, Didi, Eusebio, Best, Gento
Names in bold are doubtful ! I think Eusebio made MUCH BETTER case than Wright here (at least he succeeded at both events: UCL and WC) even G,Best would also make his claim there. As much as I love Fachetti, N Santos was just more complete and skillful
Sorry, did not realize it was already available through google. Here a public link (doesn't mention the B team though) http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1083573/index.htm
