Nigeria are confident of winning, though Cameroon also had a strong record in recent U17 and U20 tournaments. Mali and EQG return to U20 competition after 4 years. Nigeria's coach Christopher Danjuma also manages the league team Nasarawa Amazons, who won the 2017 NWPL title. Gift Monday is a winning name too "African Games 2019: Group B Opener South Africa (u20) 0-3 Nigeria (u20) [Gift Monday 4', Zainab Olapade 40', Cynthia Aku 65'] Favourites Nigeria off to a winning start. Shame Ghana, the other biggest U20w side in Africa, is not in Rabat. #AfricanGames #AAG"- (JWsports1, Twitter) It looked like a good match of north African neighbours at the Stade Boubker Ammar - highlights below: "[Morocco's] Noura El Moudni scored in the 28th and 58th minute and Salma Estetine scored in the 83rd minute. Algeria's Abla Ben Senoussi scored in the 48th minute and Nassima Bakhti in the 51st minute." - (BelPresse.com, Autotranslated) - twitter.com/arryadiatv/status/1162457199240724480 🎥|المنتخب الوطني النسوي لأقل من 20 سنة يفوز على نظيره الجزائري بنتيجة 3-2 ضمن الجولة الأولى من دور المجموعات .#الألعاب_الإفريقية_الرباط_2019 @2019Jeux @FRMFOFFICIEL @FAFAlgeria pic.twitter.com/7uz9GuxNuf— Arryadia TV (@arryadiatv) August 16, 2019 The opening ceremony is on Monday in Rabat.
I like how, often, Nigerian girls are named after abstract concepts, as seen with other members of this very team (Joy, Grace) or with other female athletes in Nigerian history (Blessing Okagbare, Glory Alozie, Mercy Nku, Charity Opara...), but Gift Monday is indeed priceless!!! True story: I once met a Nigerian girl who had been called... Happiness! What a wonderful name, I thought to myself back then.
TODAY GROUP A Morocco 4 - Mali 1 Algeria 1 - Equatorial Guinea 0 No word of the Mali vs. Equatorial Guinea match will be rescheduled as the game would be meaningless. 1. Morocco 3-0-0 2. Algeria 2-0-1 3. Mali 0-0-2 4. Equatorial Guinea 0-0-2
Damn... the collapse of EQG from where they were less than a cycle ago is stunning. Granted, they brought it on themselves, and the reason for their disqualifications in the meantime suggest their previous heights were unfounded, but still - from three consecutive CAF finals and a narrow away-goals elimination, to such a long winless streak is quite the impressive fall from grace. They were #50 in the FIFA rankings as recently as early 2016 but tumbled down to 70th in the 2018 Cup of Nations and will probably sink below 80th after this subregional tournament.
