Bit of a risk going for a guy without any experience with a club, but he's coming out of the same role that Tim Bezbatchenko had before going to Toronto and he had them looking very solid on paper going into the season.
Not a lot of guys in the entire world though that have such a thorough understanding of MLS both as a player AND in the MLS front office. He had MAJOR responsibilities while working for the MLS NY office such as contracting 200+ players, overseeing each individual club's cap situation, CBA negotiations, etc. If there is one guy in the league that knows every single which way to acquire a player and get under the CAP it's Curtis. I feel very VERY good about this hire.
On the one hand it's just guaranteed for one season. OTOH, it's a rebuilding year. If he's as good as that, he has the opportunity to really put his stamp on the team. That's something I don't think Soehn really understood when looking at the job. Do it right and Curtis will be solidified in his reputation and job security.
Curtis is getting his philosophy out there already. And of course he's willing to work with Cahill, but what happens if Cahill is ready to move on? And of course with the tug of war NYC FC is having with MC FC over Lampard, the Red Bulls can come out ahead for just having some clarity of vision on the player front.
