    La Liga

24/01/1954 Racing de Santander 1-1 Real Madrid

Stadium: Campos de Sport del Sardinero

ABC Madrid headlined: “Santander and Madrid played a game with excessive precautions on both sides”

“Alsua was the best player of all, and Molowny and Moro scored the goals, with Vasquez and Becerril being sent off”

Under nice weather, with the pitch in magnificent condition, Santander-Real Madrid settled to a draw. The match never reached the heights that were forecasted, primarily because Madrid preferred to undo the creative game of the home side, and especially from Alsua, the star of the afternoon, according to the report.

The text mentioned that most sides that are visitors prefer to play a destructive game, hoping to then achieve something productive from their forward-line on counterattacks. This tactic was viewed as the right choice given the situation of what Madrid plays with, having a forward-line that tends to steer clear away from clashes with central defenders, with the exception of Joseito, according to the report.

“Di Stefano could have obtained the goal of triumph”

That concern with the defence caused Di Stefano to miss a goal when he was one on one with the goalkeeper because he was more concerned watching what the defence did instead of the goal and his shot landed into the hands of the GK. The text mentioned that with 15 minutes remaining, Di Stefano, all alone “incomprehensively” missed an open goal.

“The goalkeeper and defence, the best for Madrid”

This time Di Stefano was defended by zone while Molowny and Gento were man-marked. This tactical plan worked well. But in contrast, offensively things did not turn out so favorably for the home side.

“Individually, from Madrid, the four components from the defence were the most pleasant…”

La Vanguardia reported that the game was cluttered with frequent fouls, where the ref had to send off two players after 25 minutes.

Mundo Deportivo headlined: “A bad first half and a very good second period: The result has been just”

The text gave the impression of a match where Madrid played the first half with caution, given their fear of losing the lead in the table to Barcelona. Santander also showed too much respect to their opponent. While both sides showed signs of nervousness in the first half, the second period improved with both clubs leaving their fears behind in the dressing rooms.

ABC Sevilla reported: “The game was difficult for the ref due to the rough game. Proof of that is Mr. Mazagatos had to send off Becerril and Vasquez, which on many occasions attempted to attack each other….”

    The goals:
50th minute: Molowny opened the score after tapping in a rebound from a rejected cross supplied from Di Stefano.
55th minute: Moro headed in the equalizer.

    La Liga

31/01/1954 Real Madrid 1-0 Real Oviedo

    Stadium: Chamartin

    50.000 spectators

ABC Madrid headlined: “Blizzard, atrocious cold and a poor game characterized Real Madrid-Oviedo”

The text ironically mentioned that in a frigid cold, poorly played, that a “fat” player in Molowny ‘unexpectedly’ scored the match winner out of the blue in the 79th minute, which saved Madrid from falling into second or third place in the standings, defeating Oviedo, one of the bottom table sides. Ironically he was also criticized for his lack of work, consistency, living off his fame, but in one moment of brilliance, after receiving a pass from Gento, decided the game.

Another point revolved around Di Stefano, where the report bluntly stated: “We never have liked the phenoms…”

“Di Stefano, international phenom, turncoat from some clubs to another, we never liked it not even as an idea. When we saw him play we had to accept that he was an impressive player, and we recognize that we fell into the vulgarity of proclaiming it that way coinciding with the healthy side and the parchment of the criticism. Since Sunday, we like Di Stefano up to the point as man of the club, loyal to his colours, an example of manhood and tenacity held despite all class of difficulties. Against the cold he employed the best formula: incessant activity; against the absolute need of the team game, the possible resort, splendid personal interventions; against the violence from his adversaries, which always went after the man when it was Di Stefano but never at the ball, the valor and sacrifice.”

“Di Stefano gave a great lesson of moral professionalism in combating without fainting, to get the ball when no one was serving him, and one-hundred times playing the ball until he was allowed to by the opponents or supplying devotedly, humbly, to his teammates, which wasted chances. He was the only man in the forward line of the whites, and his presence is the hope of turning the bad for Real Madrid into a remedy where it’s still possible to save that desire of becoming champions after it has been slipping away from their hands after having it gripped around their fists.”

Mundo Deportivo headlined: “With ten minutes remaining a moment of brilliance from Luis Molowny gave Madrid victory”

The text mentioned that Oviedo played a solid match where they shut down most of Madrid’s offense and that their defeat was unjust. But for Madrid plays Molowny, and although he didn’t do anything of note for 70 plus minutes, one moment of class from him was enough to seal Oviedo’s fate.

La Vanguardia reported that under intense cold and terrible winds, Madrid left a poor impression, with their home fans discontent. With a team that continues to modify their lineups, you never know what Madrid will show up, the report echoed.

    “Praises for Di Stefano…”

“…creator of plays, distributer of plays, saw time after time his initiatives frustrated or his vision frustrated from the clumsiness of his teammates. From the stands, one felt discouraged and comprehended that that man that scampered the pitch from the backlines to the front… knowing what he wanted, had to finally feel let down from those around him….”

“In sum, a poor game where Madrid showed once again their lack of ability to break the barrier of defence like the one that Oviedo lined up. Precisely once Oviedo decided to attack the game was decided. It’s when an opportunity for Molowny was taken that won the match.”

    La Liga

07/02/1954 Deportivo de La Curuña 2-2 Real Madrid

    Stadium: Nuevo Riazor

ABC Madrid headlined: “Curuña and Madrid played the best game of the season in Riazor”

Both sides were praised for their exceptional play in a highly entertaining match. The forward-line of Madrid shined, Di Stefano, Molowny and Perez Paya.

The report stated that Paniño after only 20 seconds gave the home side the lead. In the 13th minute, Di Stefano in a “skillful intervention” scored the equalizer.

In the 36th minute, Moll gave the home side the edge. But in the final minute, Di Stefano leveled inside the box.

Mundo Deportivo headlined: “The madrileños scored a goal in the last minute: Curuña, which played a great game, went always ahead in the match score”

The final goal in the last minute was after Molowny executed a free kick (a dubious free kick awarded which led to protests from the home side) and which in a commotion of events in the box, led to Di Stefano heading the ball in (2-2).

The draw was viewed as just, although Curuña had done more in a good played match with lots of action from side to side, according to the report.

The main stars were Di Stefano, which “surprised many for they did not know about his control on the ball and the intelligence with which he knew how to escape from the markers; Molowny whom battled with the greed that is not habitual in him and Perez Paya and Oliva.”

ABC Sevilla reported: “Curuña playing some inspirational moments, over a waterlogged pitch and under a torrential rain, was able to bottle Madrid, after Paniño’s first goal. Madrid responded with the exceptional play of Di Stefano and the magnificent performance from Perez Paya, who perhaps surpassed the Argentinean in effectiveness.”

La Vanguardia reported: “Di Stefano is hoping to return to Argentina”

The text made it clear that the reporters that tried to interview him found him in a bad mood and “incorrect” with them. All he was hoping for was the desire to once again return home to play for River Plate, the report stated.

Reading the past recent articles, there is already hints of Di Stefano's evolution into a player that is functioning in ways where he's dropping back into his own half to recuperate balls, to help out his defence, and of course to generate attacks. While some of this was already apparent at Millonarios in the latter part of his career in Colombia, according to Pedernera and others, now it is being put into effect at Real Madrid in 1954 at the age of 27. He has also seemed to have been able to recover his old physical form, now he is at his physical best again, after a somewhat roller-coaster ride in his first 3 months at the club.

Next game is in La Liga vs Sevilla in Madrid...

yes Like I said before, along with hidegkuti (in 6games brief at WC54) Di Stefano was the very first "false 9" ever in History. That also STAMPED his being the most complete player label by many as well!

    La Liga

    14/02/1954 Real Madrid 1-0 Sevilla

    Stadium: Chamartin

    100.000 spectators

Mundo Deportivo headlined: “The extraordinary performance from Di Stefano, Munoz and Zarraga motivated the madridista victory, only by the minimum because of the excellent performance of Bustos”

The Catalan text made it clear that this win for Madrid was imperative in their pursuit to win the league title. And they won playing a convincing first half, reaching similar heights to their performance against Barcelona in the beginning of the season. And if Madrid did not win by a heavier margin it was in part due to the great goalkeeping of Bustos.

In regards to Di Stefano’s performance, the text stated this: “Madrid’s offense, in which Di Stefano has splendidly shined, on this afternoon in Chamartin, he has displayed perhaps his best game since his days at Millonarios of Colombia.”

“Against the rough Sevilla defence, the Argentinian has not folded at any moment and has needle worked his characteristic game without avoiding the collision at any moment. His game has been magnificent, awarded during and at the end with long applauses.”

ABC Madrid headlined: “A goal from Joseito, made by Di Stefano, determined the defeat of Sevilla”

According to the report, Molowny was on his last legs, while Gento “disappeared” and Olsen “eclipsed” himself. In contrast, Di Stefano was fully praised.

    “Di Stefano, the honored professional”

“Sunday, against Sevilla, Di Stefano was 80 percent of Real Madrid.” The other 20 percent belonged to the 3 defenders and GK.

“The tactics don’t work” [This was in reference to Helenio Herrera’s decisions which were questioned].

La Vanguardia stated that La Saeta’s game was “off the charts” and that Enrique, his marker, “couldn’t with Di Stefano.”

The only goal of the game arrived after 25 minutes when Di Stefano set up Joseito inside the 18-yard box.

    Summary: 1 assist

    La Liga

    21/02/1954 Barcelona 5-1 Real Madrid

    Stadium: Les Corts

ABC Sevilla headlined: “Wide defeat of Madrid in Les Corts…”

    “Beating in Les Corts”

“Flotats almost canceled out Di Stefano…”

ABC Madrid headlined: “Wanting to maintain the draw at one goal apiece playing defensively in the second half, Madrid lost against Barcelona”

“The madridistas surprised with a good initial twenty minutes, but then they were clearly surpassed by the Catalans”

The report mentioned that Di Stefano operated in a more withdrawn position and that he was shut down by his marker. This in turn isolated Molowny and Rodriguez, and Gento was unproductive, according to the text.

Even though Kubala did not score, he was once again the architect of the best chances created for the home side.

Flotats, Di Stefano’s marker, was deemed as the best player on the field, according to the report.

La Vanguardia headlined: “Barcelona amply surpassed in the second half their draw of one goal apiece from the first half with Madrid”

    “As always, Kubala”

Coinciding with the Madrid report, Kubala was the man that spearheaded most of the best chances for Barcelona and set up three goals.

Mundo Deportivo headlined: “The azulgranas amply surpassed the Madrilenos in the second half and were on the verge of leveling the score from Chamartin in the first leg: A splendid man-marking job of Flotats on Di Stefano was one of the keys to the result”

The report mentioned that the absence of Olsen for Madrid was noted and that Di Stefano’s “excessive” individual attempts were futile against the tight marking of Flotats. In general terms, Madrid’s key players unperformed.

Meanwhile, Kubala was praised, particularly for his second half effort and Flotats was confirmed as the best and most decisive player on the pitch for his effective man-marking job on Di Stefano.

    The goals:

6th minute: Di Stefano (goal was protested due to a presumed offside when he received the pass from Perez Paya).
    14th minute: Tejada
    50th minute: Cesar Rodriguez
    74th minute: Moreno
    86th minute: Tejada
    89th minute: Manchon

    La Liga

28/02/1954 Real Madrid 2-1 Atletico de Madrid

    Stadium: Chamartin

    90.000 spectators

Mundo Deportivo headlined: “A great play, from the genius of Di Stefano, with five minutes to play, gave victory to the leader of the tournament”

“Little football and this little all in the first half, with most of the percentage going to the team which would end up winning…”

After Atletico Madrid scored, they decided to mostly defend until they were eventually punished with five minutes to go. The win for the home team was deemed as just, but should have been decided in the first period, according to the text. Munoz and Zarraga were viewed as the stand out players for Madrid.

In regards to Di Stefano, this is what was said: “And let’s speak about Di Stefano. Once again the Argentine player has been the blacksmith of the victory of his side. His job today has been as in other afternoons, enthusiastic and worker. Despite the tight marking of Hernandez he knew how to take advantage magnificently the two occasions that were presented to him to score the two goals. The second goal deserves to be especially mentioned which gave them victory. He scored it with one of his brilliant plays, with his back turned to goal diverting the shot with his backheel and out of the reach of Menendez.”

[It was his most creative goal to date for the club, even if it brought protests from the visiting side which argued that he had been offside].

La Vanguardia headlined: Victory arrived late”

This newspaper also spoke about the controversy surrounding the second goal. Was it offside or not? Depends on which side you were supporting, you would find your answer.

In any event, Madrid should have won based on merits of wanting to win, according to the report. But it also must be said that Atletico were missing several key players. Tactically the vising side approached the match with a game-plan of giving the home side possession and then responding with counterattacks. After 5 minutes they took the lead through Silva and the game-plan seemed to be working. But Munoz, Madrid’s midfielder, started to take control of the match in what was possibly his best display of the season. For 20 minutes Real Madrid pinned Atletico back, but the posts, the defence, and the fine goalkeeping of Menendez, kept them out.

It took a long-range shot from Di Stefano in the 25th minute to level the game. The situation didn’t change much until the 85th minute when Di Stefano decided the game with a backheel shot.

ABC Madrid headlined: “Deserving win from Real Madrid against Atletico, whom throughout the second half abused the destructive game”

“In the first half, the club of Chamartin played very well but didn’t obtain an advantage”

“Munoz was the best player out of all and Di Stefano scored the two goals, the last one with five minutes remaining”

    Summary: 2 goals

I'll see to squeeze in a few reports here and there before I'm unavailable for a while again.

    La Liga

07/03/1954 Real Sociedad 3-6 Real Madrid

A note about this game: Contradicting accounts surround the goal scorers for Real Madrid in their next match vs Real Sociedad. Some sources don't credit Di Stefano with any goals, but sources like La Vanguardia and ABC Sevilla credit Di Stefano with 2 goals, one in each half. Mundo Deportivo also indicated that Di Stefano scored but only one goal by deflecting a cross with his head into the net in the first half. However ABC Madrid and bdfutbol.com do not credit him with any goals. No video footage exists that can confirm what happened.

    http://hemeroteca.lavanguardia.com/preview/1954/03/09/pagina-24/32785812/pdf.html

    The summary of the match:

La Vanguardia reported that Madrid from the very beginning were able to demonstrate their superiority over the local side and went into the half with a comfortable 4-1 lead. The match evened itself up in the second period, but Madrid were just too much for the home team and all players of Madrid left a very good impression.

Meanwhile Mundo Deportivo headlined: "The Madrid side played admirably, but their work was facilitated by the errors and concessions from their opponent"

The match was played on good pitch conditions which aided Madrid to play well, but it was also the alarming errors from their opponent which facilitated matters. As previously noted, Madrid stormed past their rival in the first half and after 20 minutes were already ahead by 4 goals.

Joseito scored only after 5 minutes and 5 minutes later Atienza extended the lead. Di Stefano then was credited with deflecting a cross from Molowny with his head to convert the third team goal. Olsen converted the 4th goal in the 20th minute after receiving a pass from Di Stefano. In the last minute of the first half Real Sociedad cut the lead through Zubillaga.

Perez's goal made things interesting for a few minutes in the beginning of the second half, but hopes faded quickly when Di Stefano set up another goal, this time for Molowny in the 58th minute, and in the 82nd minute, Atienza nailed the 6th goal for Madrid. Zubillaga would score again in the final minute for the home side, but it was small consolation.

Real Madrid had put on a clinic, but Real Sociedad had performed very poorly. In the end Di Stefano was highly praised for his display, playing a total game with the home fans of Real Sociedad applauding his display. There had been no doubt, this game had belonged to Alfredo Di Stefano.

Yes, it's strange how they contradict (btw thanks for those links). It is certainly not a unique case, but officially it has gone down in the record books that he did not score, despite multiple sources citing that he did. Unfortunately no video really has cleared this up; it definitely remains a mystery.

In addition this is what ABC Madrid said about his performance in this match: "The performance of Di Stefano reached the level of exceptional. He was all for the team: center-forward in outlining the attacks and finishing them; interior when this job was to reinforce and support the midfield. And in any other position on the pitch, the same in attack and in defence..."

And El Mundo Deportivo stated "Hizo futbol de todos las marcas", which is "He made futbol of all the brands".

13/03/1954 Real Madrid 5-1 Real Zaragoza

    Friendly

    Stadium: Chamartin, Madrid

ABC Madrid reported that due to the rough and intense nature of La Liga, this game was not taken with the aplomb that in other competitive matches tend to occur. The tension and nerves are released; both sides are able to provide a fine spectacle with little physical contact of players trying to hurt one another. The forwards attempted many plays and many times things went their way. This time Molowny and Olsen improved compared to past matches.

Once again, Di Stefano was able to exhibit his talents, with the report stating, “Di Stefano again exhibited qualities that are rarely common…”

Di Stefano scored Madrid’s 2nd goal, while Atienza had scored the first from a cross by Navarro. Joseito, Olsen and Gento completed the list of scorers for Madrid.

    Summary: 1 goal

El Mundo Deportivo only mentions the score-line and who played but does not get into details. There is no other info from the rest of the newspapers.

    21/03/1954 Real Madrid 6-0 Jaen

    Stadium: Chamartin, Madrid

ABC Madrid headlined: “The great game of the white team blew the defective ‘bolt’ of the Andalusian side”

ABC Madrid: “The best, without any doubt, Di Stefano, enormous player, authentic phenom, that, for the example of professionals, always puts forth all his contribution of efforts and shows a physical form that can only be based upon a careful preparation and regimen lifestyle that appears essential for the professional footballer.”

La Vanguardia: “Madrid played so well because Jaen did nothing to avoid it and if they did they did it poorly. This is not to take anything away from Madrid’s clear and deserved victory, it is simply to put things into the proper place…”

The text emphasizes that Jaen approached this game only to defend. The six goals they conceded could have been twelve, but they seemed content with that.

As for Alfredo, it said “one again believes in the resurgence of Di Stefano whom returns as that exceptional player that we witnessed at Millonarios of Colombia.”

Mundo Deportivo headlined: “Like a simple training session, Madrid decided it in the first half hour of the match”

The text makes it clear that Madrid had no opposition and that Di Stefano gets better as each game goes by.

    The goals:

In the 6th minute, Molowny shot hard on goal, the ball was rejected and Olsen followed in to score.

Three minutes later Molowny scored the second lobbing the keeper.

Some minutes later Di Stefano deflected a shot with his head to score the team’s third goal. He would then add another to his tally with a swerving free kick over the wall in the 18th minute.

In the 4oth minute, Atienza, after a great play from Olsen made it 5-0.

In the second half, Navarro, the defender, ran forward to score the final goal from outside the box.

Summary: 2 goals (header and free kick)

    La Liga

    28/03/1954 Valladolid 4-3 Real Madrid

    Stadium: Zorilla, Valladolid

Mundo Deportivo headlined: “The leader, with a 3-0 lead in their favor after 37 minutes, was evenly levelled through the middle of the second half, to then be beaten by a great vallisoletana comeback”

ABC Madrid headlined: “With some minutes of ardor and authentic Spanish fury the players of Valladolid beat Real Madrid”

“The madrilenos had obtained an edge of three to one in the first half, despite the vallisoletanos having had dominated more”

Under a capacity sellout crowd, viewers were able to enjoy a “magnificent” and exciting match, according to the text. Real Madrid was superior in the first half. They created numerous advances, principally spearheaded by Alfredo Di Stefano, “a player that is likewise in attack as in defence, and with an elasticity rarely known in these times. He was the primary star of Real Madrid, although he couldn’t always play wide, because Lesmes knew how to play effectively and counteract in great part the tremendous efficiency of Madrid’s forward.”

Summary of Real Madrid’s goals, taken from La Vanguardia:

“During the first minutes Madrid dominated totally in enemy territory and after 15 obtained their first goal from a corner kick taken by Atienza, finished off with his back turned towards goal by Di Stefano, and the second goal advanced by Munoz, picked up by Joseito, whom from outside the box, with a potent shot, beat Saso after 26 minutes. Atienza, very close in proximity to Saso, obtained the 3rd goal after 37 minutes.”

[Note: ABC Madrid stated that Di Stefano set up Joseito, not Munoz, but Mundo Deportivo agreed with La Vanguardia]

ABC Madrid reported: “Valladolid gave the surprise in the second half”

The report mentioned how unlikely it was to forecast such a slip from Madrid, as they were convinced to have the game in the bag. It had been a great reaction from the home side, willed by their Spanish fury to turn things around.

Rabadan (twice), Lolo and Morro scored the goals for Valladolid, a side that was still fighting to survive from falling into relegation.

For Madrid, despite the unexpected defeat, their hopes at the title were still safe; with only four rounds left to play they held a two point lead over Barcelona.

Summary: 1 goal (1 assist ? La Vanguardia and Mundo Deportivo said no, ABC Madrid yes)

    La Liga

04/04/1954 Real Madrid 4-0 Sporting de Gijon

    Stadium: Chamartin, Madrid

ABC Madrid headlined: “Madrid, winner in Chamartin, one step closer to the title thanks to the defeat of Barcelona in Riazor”

“Happy presentation of Mateos and another great performance from Di Stefano against the Gijoneses”

Real Madrid with this victory against bottom table Gijon and with the defeat of Barcelona virtually had secured their chances at winning La Liga. The victory came as no surprise, taking into consideration that Sporting de Gijon was the weakest side in the league, straight on their way to being relegated to the second division.

In this match the star that may have shone the brightest was the debutant, Mateos, whom replaced Molowny, a player that was harshly criticized by the press, considered “terribly in decline”. Mateos had a splendid match, complementing Di Stefano up front wonderfully. And it was after 17 minutes that Mateos scored the opening goal, cleverly utilizing his head to make an own pass forward around a defender, to then slot the ball past the goalkeeper. It was regarded as a great goal that directed the game towards victory. After this he produced other fine moments until Alfredo took over.

ABC Madrid: “Once again Di Stefano”

“The rest of the story was written once again by Di Stefano. He scored the rest of the goals, indulging in the satisfaction of going ahead in the scoring charts ahead of Kubala, placing himself in first place where he belongs, because he, without any doubt is today the greatest player that walks these Spanish fields.”

He scored the second goal of the match after 34 minutes by calmly placing ball well out the reach of the goalkeeper. The third goal was nicely created with a combination of passes with Mateos. The fourth goal came from the penalty spot after a defender had handled the ball.

“But apart from the three goals, something relatively easy given the inferiority of Gijon, whom already had given up by the second half, Di Stefano repeated his performances of always. To search for the ball in all areas of the pitch, to attack and to defend, to serve the teammate that is better positioned, to untangle defenders with his feints and to play the ball with a rare ability and perfection.”

Mundo Deportivo also praised the performance of Mateos, cataloguing him as the standout player of the match. According to them this was a great acquisition to the squad. Di Stefano was also praised up forward and Oliva at the back for “los blancos”.

ABC Sevilla also mentioned Mateos as the standout man having a “magnificent” match.

According to the newspaper La Vanguardia it was “an easy match”. The report mentioned that the Chamartin stadium produced the lowest amount of spectators of the season and that it was also the easiest victory of Madrid in the league. The visiting side had entered the match morally defeated beforehand. Di Stefano once again had showcased his current “splendid form” and Mateos made the headlines for his excellent debut.

Summary: 3 goals (1 from the penalty spot)

Some random footage that I found which was uploaded last month. Interestingly there is some rare images from his days at River Plate but it's mostly from Real Madrid.
