It's more or less trivially difficult, though perhaps time-consuming, to get an Italian passport if you qualify. If Joel does indeed have one, and Alan qualifies the same way (which I assume he would as neither was born in Italy and I presume they have the same two parents) it's probably safe to assume they both have them. Of course, there are a few assumptions baked in there, such as that they didn't get Joel's before Alan was born.
