The Suburbanite has a good article on Evan Bush's relatively long path to MLS. “The guys I went to school with, we have a great bond. In a lot of the circles in MLS, they talk about how tight the Akron guys are,” Bush said. “It was a running joke that it’s almost a cult for a few years.

Akron 0-1 Loyola MD Good contest. Zips may have been the better side, but not by much. Greyhounds scored a garbage goal in garbage time, with 39 seconds left. http://www.gozips.com/news/2017/8/1...to-1-0-win-over-akron-in-exhibition-play.aspx
Curious from those that follow the team more, how this year's team compares to last year's team. Looks like they lost a few players from a team that had more of a "down" year (for Akron's standards) last year. Also, I didn't realize how international this team is. 14 international players.
All 10 outfield players for Akron had been subbed by the 60th minute, so continuity was a problem. I don't remember a non-spring game where that happened. The referee was laughably bad about estimating 10 yards for free kicks. After a ludicrous 6.5 yard wall in the second half, he received so much badgering that he finally decided to walk it off and he was offf by 3 full yards. His pacing off of the distance won him a mighty sarcastic period of cheers and applause.
That's Embick's style. How he won at Missouri Baptist. It's gotten more and more international since he's been at Akron.
I stand corrected. As I look more into the teams, each of them has become more international than I realized. I know weve been talking about the international flavor of teams growing, but I hadnt realize how quickly it happened.
I had the same reaction. To your initial comment, Akron probably has the highest % among the elite programs.
More internationals of late, especially if Canadians count as internationals, which I think they should.
I would argue they don't count. I mean, Canadian teams play in all three of our pro leagues and there are even Canadian NCAA teams. (Well, one.) They play in our academies and other developmental systems and often Canadian youth clubs play in big American tournaments. Yes, it's technically another country, but between the proximity, the language (mostly), the cultural similarities and, mostly, the crosspolination with American soccer, it's hard to view them as that separate an entity. Basically a soccer version of Puerto Rico. Having said all that, it would be nice to see Akron recruit more high-end US kids. However, while Embick is a good coach, he's no Caleb Porter and he isn't going to consistently get the same level of US kids that Porter did so I understand him going the international route. (Out of curiosity, how many American kids has Akron sent to MLS who were recruited after Porter left?)
Also, important to note: IMG Academy isn't what it was and Embick is not a USYNT coach. Both of those aspects were huge in recruiting for Porter.
(Out of curiosity, how many American kids has Akron sent to MLS who were recruited after Porter left?)[/QUOTE] Both Reggie Laryea (Canadian) and Adam Najem were recruited by Embick in 2012 after Porter had announced he would leave on season's end. Remember that CP announced the Timbers job in August 2012. Each is slowly incorporating into their club's lineup, Orlando and Philadelphia respectively. Jonathan Lewis is with NYFC and on the cusp of exploding into USMNT. Watch out! Danilo Radjen (drafted by Dynamo but not signed). Many other Zips recruited later than 2011 are in USL and/or NASL. I can see your point about Canadians, but I cannot agree. Canada really is actually a foreign nation, despite the cultural cross-pollination.
