    MD1: China 0:1 Vietnam

SOLO (20 Sept 2010) – Vietnam stunned 10-man China with a late goal from skipper Dang Anh Tuan in the opening match of the AFF Under-16 Championship at the Manahan Stadium in Solo, Indonesia here today. China were the clear favourites but their hopes of a winning start fell apart after towering defender, Liu Yiming was sent off in the 74th minute.

China had the better share of the game and also had far more chances at goal compared to their Southeast Asian opponents. Vietnam on the other hand had to wait for the breaks to charge forward and take their chances. And it was during one of these breaks that Anh Tuan delivered the winner six minutes from time.

China had the respect of the other teams even before they played their first match. But who could blame the other teams as China have always churned out decent sides in the past. And just two minutes into the game, China looked set to live up to their billing as Liang Yu almost blasted his side ahead.

A few minuets later, Cui Wei’s header slipped past the post to the relief of the Vietnamese. In the 10th minute, Vietnam’s Huynh Tan Tai’s freekick had the lanky Chinese keeper Wang Boyan scrambling to clear the crisp strike.

The quality of the game declined from then on. Although China had the bigger share of possession, their strikers were unable to crack the Vietnam defence. Chinese skipper Hu Weiwei was a constant bother but he got booked for deliberately stretching his arm out to bring the ball down.

In the dying minutes, Weiwei dropped to his knees and it was clear he was in trouble. He was helped off the pitch clutching his arm but just before he could be replaced, the referee blew for the break.

Sun Zhengao took over the skipper’s band as China took the fight to their opponents with Cui Wei and second half substitute Zheng Dalun leading the attack. Against the run of play, Vietnam had a brilliant chance but Do Manh Giang’s low drive was saved by Wang Boyan.

As the game progressed, the Chinese players, who took 25 hours and five transfers to get to Solo, began to wear down and as many as four players – Cui Wei, Shen Tianfeng, Liang Yu and Hu Bowen – crash to the ground with cramps.

In the 74th minute, Yiming picked up his second booking when he brought down Huynh Tan Tai just outside the box.

    MD1: Indonesia 1:0 Timor Leste

SOLO (20 Sept 2010) – Antoni Putra Nugraha was a hero last night at the Manahan Stadium here in the city of Solo. Deep in injury time and with the rain making things even harder, an exhausted Antoni gave it his all as he raced down the left and let loose a shot that set the stage for a famous victory for Indonesia.

With the bruising tie clearly heading towards a goalless affair, Antoni provided the winner against Timor Leste in an emotional encounter in the second match on the opening day of the AFF Under-16 Championship.

While Indonesia were in the driver’s seat for most of the game, Timor Leste surprised everyone with some excellent moves that could have led to goals. Indonesia should have wrapped up the game earlier but were let down by some poor finishing.

Ricky Alfian, the nippy left flanker, along with Ricki Bardes Leurama and Antoni were constantly harassing the Timor goal. What stopped them from breaking the duck any earlier was some superb goalkeeping from Ramos Maxanches.

In the first half, Indonesia managed to sneak through several times and really should have at least scored once but their strikers attempts were mainly snuffed out by a quick Ramos between the posts. One fine example was when Ricki broke through and with only Ramos to beat ended with nothing to show. Ricki fell in dismay as the keeper pushed out the close range shot.

Angga Febryanto Putra and Ricky also saw their efforts saved to go just wide.

Timor Leste saw their best chance of the first half wasted when striker Nidio Ferreira Alves stormed through the defence and only had the keeper to beat, but he was too slow to take his shot.

Indonesia, inspired by the 10,000 plus singing fans, continued to push hard but were unable to find the mark. Sadly, the game took a turn for the bad with about six yellow cards being handed out in the second half.

The rain, which came pouring down some 10 minutes before the end, made life harder, yet credit to the Indonesian team as they plundered on in search of the winner. And they were justly rewarded by player No. 8, Antoni to cap a brilliant start for the hosts in this tournament.

Nice to see the AFF including the line-ups in the match reports. I hope they keep that up, not just for this tournament but for all future AFF competitions.

    MD2: Timor Leste 0:1 China

SOLO (22 Sept 2010) – Striker Liang Yu provided China with their first win of the AFF Under-16 Championship at the expense of Timor Leste who suffered their second consecutive defeat and are out of contention for a place in the final. The slim victory has given China hope of making the final on Sunday.

“The players gave a better account of themselves than they did two days ago and it has put us in a better position to win a place in the final. I told the players to be more patient and today they found the opportunity to score and win the game,” said Zhang Ning, the chief coach of China.

China, who lost to a late Vietnam goal two days ago, appeared to have shrugged off the effects of their long journey to Solo and clearly displayed better form against Timor Leste today. Despite starting without four regulars, skipper Hu Weiwei, Su Shun and Chen Nan who are injured and Liu Yiming who is suspended, China were in control for most of the match.

The Chinese strikers were on fire in the somewhat cool conditions brought about by a steady drizzle and heavy cloud cover. Luo Tian and Chen Shuo were menacing in front and were making quick runs into their opponents box with relative ease. In the 10th minute, the Luo-Chen connection almost got the opener but Chen’s header from a Luo cross just wheezed past the post.

In the 15th minute, the partnership almost made it but this time the keeper Ramos Maxanches caught the low drive. Two minutes on, the nippy Luo sent a deep cross that the last Timor defender let past him, thinking it was on the way out. But to his dismay, Liang Yu dashed in from the left and blasted the ball in.

The Luo-Chen show had several more misses including in the 39th minute when Ramos blocked a low drive from Chen. Frustration got the better of Luo and he was booked for brash tackle a minute from the break.

The second half was a tame affair with Timor Leste trying hard to chase the game. Their valiant efforts however were unsuccessful as the Chinese wall proved unbreakable.

“China was the better team today and they showed it with their physical presence. The referee was a lot better today and he made several good decisions including the disallowed goal which was really off-side,” added Neylo Isaac, the team manager of Timor.

    MD2: Vietnam 1:0 Indonesia

SOLO (22 Sept 2010) – Vietnam struck an early goal tonight to secure their second straight win and put them a step closer to a spot in the final of the AFF Under-16 Championship at the Manahan Stadium in here. The sixth minute strike from Nguyen Do put a huge dent in Indonesia’s hopes of a good result in front of their loyal fans.

"Playing against the home team is always difficult, so our gameplan was to defend and rely on the counter-attack. We scored the early goal and that gave us the confidence for the rest of the match," said Dien Bien, the team manager of Vietnam.

For Indonesia, their hopes of making the final will now hinge on the outcome of their final preliminary game against China on Friday. Vietnam, with six points in the bag, are virtually through and only need a draw with Timor Leste on Friday evening to claim their place in the final.

The atmosphere was superb as the local Solo fans, known as Pasoepati, passionately cheered on their team. Unfortunately, Indonesia suffered a lapse at the back and Vietnam’s Nguyen Do managed to scramble in what turned out to be the match winner just six minutes into the game.

Stunned by the early setback, Indonesia fought back and tried hard to get the equalizer but were unfortunate Nguyen Son Hai was on song and stopped everything that went his way. Ricky Alfian and Antoni Putro Nugraha, who netted the winner against Timor Leste two days ago, were on the prowl but caught nothing.

Vietnam should have netted at least one more goal but Nguyen Xuan Nam, probably the most hardworking player in the side, skipper Dang Anh Tuan and Nguyen Van Vui found that their best tonight was just not enough to add to the tally.

Indonesia had great chance in the 71st minute when Reynaldy Junior’s long freekick found Antoni in the box. But Antoni could not keep his shot down as Vietnam heaved a sigh of relief.

"It was tough playing against a team like Vietnam and we struggled because we did not have a strong playmaker. Against China, we have little choice but to win the game to make the final," added Mundar Karya, the chief coach of Indonesia.

Vietnam: Nguyen Son Hai (GK), Nguyen Ha Long, Dao Duy Khanh, Dang Anh Tuan (cpt), Do Manh Giang, Huynh Tan Tai (Nguyen Van Hiep), Vo Ngoc Duc, Nguyen Do (Nguyen Viet Thang), Vo Ngoc Toan, Nguyen Van Nui, Nguyen Xuan Nam (Nguyen Anh Phong).

    MD3: Vietnam 1:2 Timor Leste

SOLO (24 Sept 2010) – In a match which has no real consequence as Vietnam has already booked their place in the final of the AFF Under-16 Championship, Rogerio Seran provided Timor Leste with their first win here with a slim 2-1 victory at the Manahan Stadium this evening.

Timor had gone into their first match of the competition with a 1-0 loss to hosts Indonesia before conceding their second loss in the competition through a similar score line against China.

“We won the game today because of the determination of the players and their spirit to put up a better performance than what they have shown in the first two matches. But the victory was at a price where now we have four players on the injured list,” said Kim Shin Hwan, the chief coach of Timor Leste.

With Vietnam already in the final of the competition this year following their similar 1-0 victory over China and Indonesia, it has allowed them the chance to take things a little easier against Timor Lester.

That advantage allowed them to use eight substitutes in place of the regulars and this change affected the shape and the confidence of the team as Timor Leste pressed from the start.

Timor Leste were quick to make full use of this opportunity to carve out their first goal of the game in the 23rd minute when Nidio Alves pounced on the mistake of Vietnam keeper Le Van Nghia to take the lead.

The score remained to the advantage of Timor in the first half before two substitutions just after the break gave Vietnam more pace in midfield.

In the 57th minute, they duly found the equalizer they were looking for when Ho Ngoc Thang slotted home following some hesitant Timor defence.

But sustained pressure from Timor allowed them to score the winner following a neat one-two between Nidio and Rogerio.

“We had to make several substitutions as we knew that we will be playing in the final in two days. Timor thoroughly deserved to win today as they were determined and enterprising,” added Bien, the team manager of Vietnam.

    MD3: Indonesia 1:3 China

SOLO (24 Sept 2010) – China banked on the return of lanky defender Liu Yiming to beat hosts Indonesia 3-1 to set up a final clash against Vietnam in the AFF Under-16 Championship in two days.

Yiming, who was red carded in China's first match against Vietnam, was influential in making sure that Purwa Putra and friends were kept at bay.

"Yes Liuming made it a lot difference today and after sitting out the last match (against Timor Leste) due to the red card suspension, he was more fresh against Indonesia. We are just glad to be in the final where today, the players really gave a good account of themselves," said Zhang Ning, the chief coach of China.

It was China who were the early aggresor even though the hosts were buoyed by the several thousand Pasoepati fans behind them.

And just nine minutes into the game, China grabbed the lead when Liang Yu flicked the ball into the net after a throw-in from Zheng Dalin.

As Indonesia pushed hard in search of the equaliser, they fell further behind when Chen Shuo found the space and time for the second goal.

With the score at 2-0 to China's advantage at the break, Indonesia came out stronger in the second half and after some sustained pressure up until the 59th minute, a cross from Ricky Alfian came off Chinese defender Sun Zhengao and into goal.

That gave Indonesia further confidence but in their haste to find the all important equaliser, they left themselves vulnerable at the back which substitute Shen Tianfeng did not hesitate to punish in the 70th minute of play.

"The players only came out in the second half. The first half, they just did not play as well as they could. They should learn to play their normal game no matter who they play against. It is something which they need to master with more matches they play in the run up to the Uzbekista meet," added Mundari Karya, the chief coach of Indonesia.

It's funny you say that because the age group above they came 4th out of 4th.

So yes, they are the best at u-16 and have proven it today, but not at all youth football like you think.

A agree with Mr Christianhoang's opinion! Now in ASEAN, Vietnam is the best country who training young football man that places Thailand in past, because of Vietnam has been advanced investing in young football in recent years. And I think VN NT will be the best team in ASEAN a few years ahead...

Then ask yourself why Malaysia are the current champions at SEA Games level, which all nations take seriously.

Vietnam are currently doing well, there's no doubt about it, but its hard to say other teams are in the past. Look at club level, where are Vietnamese teams? The youth football certainly isn't transferred to the pro game.
