Glad to have a new DC-area club (and the Braddock Road club has a storied history, with alums like Wendy Gabauer, Cindi Harkes, Amanda Cromwell, Mia Hamm, and Jillian Ellis), but sorry to lose Fredericksburg and Virginia Beach. I didn't like the way the latter played of late, but their heritage goes back to the origins of the W-League. And the Gulf Coast Texans aren't a new club, just new to the W-League. They were in the WPSL Final Four last year.
So NoVa didn't come back. Who else am I missing? Also, interesting to see a WPSL team joining the W-League it's usually the other way around.
Remember that LA Strikers and Pali Blues combined, so that's effectively losing a team. (That messed up my math initially, too.) Kenn listed all the other three drops. Well, it's the second time in two years, as the Bay Area Breeze did the same last year.
Fredericksburg Impact, Virginia Beach Piranhas and VSI Tampa Bay FC, yep missed that at the bottom of his post.
A big chunk of the former Northern Virginia Majestics organization is now behind the Washington Spirit. I doubt you'll see them return as long as the Spirit are around.
Thanks everyone for clearing that up. I know remember when that happened. Boy I'm getting old, keep forgetting stuff. LOL
Silverbacks have a nice 5k park. What are the odds they might be a NWSL club in the future? I doubt Fitz will comeback with the Beat.
Yeah, KSU is bigger and nicer. Besides, a "nice stadium" is a poor gauge of NWSL potential... And I don't think NASL currently has the structure where having an NWSL team is financially viable, especially for the Silverbacks, a team that's had financial trouble (to the point of suspending the men's team for not one but two seasons) before. The women's team doesn't draw much, either, despite having won the league recently, so I really don't see any reason for the Silverbacks organization to think NWSL would work for them at the moment.
That's true. That said, stadiums are a problem in the NWSL, it seems. I like Kansas City's move, even with a smaller capacity. But, yeah, The Silverbacks ponying up for an NWSL side would seem to be a stretch.
