The significance of Wednesday’s match against Oman was that finally Kuwait NT has overcome its problem with playing the final group stage match with two chances to qualify (win or draw)... we’ve been losing the last match every time we are put in this situation... for 22 years!!!

*OGQ – 1988 – Kuwait was one point ahead of Iraq and needed a draw in the final match against Iraq to qualify to the Olympic games in Seoul, Kuwait lost 1-0.

*WCQ – 1989 – Kuwait was two points ahead of UAE who had a superior goal difference, a draw would put Kuwait among the six teams playing the final World Cup qualifiers, Kuwait lost 1-0.

*WCQ – 1993 – Kuwait was level with Saudi Arabia on points, goal difference before the final match was in favour of Kuwait, Kuwait needs a draw or a win to qualify to the next round, Kuwait lost 2-0.

*OG – 2000 – after a successful qualifying campaign, Sydney 2000 was to witness yet another loss of two chances for Kuwait, Kuwait came to the final group stage match against USA needing a draw, Kuwait lost 3-1.

*WCQ – 2001 – Kuwait needed a draw against Bahrain to qualify to the final World Cup qualifying stages, Kuwait lost 1-0. This was the first time Kuwait lost the two chances puzzle at home!!!

*WCQ – 2005 – Kuwait forced its way through past China in a day full of controversy across bigsoccer members in 2004, the day I registered I think... Kuwait reached the final qualifying stages, struggling to find its form, and changing the manager three times during the qualifiers as Kuwait FA interference and corruption becomes clear, Kuwait needed a draw against Uzbekistan in Tashkent to reach the playoffs against Bahrain, Kuwait lead with two goals before losing 3-2.

*ACQ – 2006 – Kuwait needed a draw against Bahrain to reach the 2007 Asian Cup finals hosted (by a stupid AFC decision) in 4 nations!!! Kuwait lost 2-1.

*OG – 2007 – Kuwait again needed a draw against Bahrain to reach the Beijing 2008 Olympic games final qualifying stages, having not lost any match throughout the campaign, and with flashbacks of the humiliating walk out of the Bahrain international stadium just 7 months ago, Kuwait lost 2-1.

On the other hand, Kuwait always wins when they are playing the last match with a single chance, needing a win only, the controversial win against Malaysia 6-1, final matches of Gulf Cup 13 and Gulf cup 14 against Qatar and UAE respectively. Final matches against South Korea twice in the Asian Cup 1996 and in 2000, are just few examples.

Although, history only remembers the results, it is worth pointing out that the last three incidents in which Kuwait have scored against their opponents they were done badly by the AFC... since the war began between Kuwait FA and AFC in 2002... Kuwait conceded an imaginary penalty against Uzbekistan in 2005... AFC allowed nationalised Abdullah Fatay and Jessy Jones to play for Bahrain especially for the Kuwait match.... funnily enough, even against Oman they allowed the suspended Fawzi Basheer to play, a straight red offence was committed by an Omani player right under the nose of the referee that went unpunished... let’s just hope that the AFC have some decency in them to be fair during the 2011 Asian cup finals.

Congratulations to all teams who made it through to the finals and better luck next time to those who didn't make it.
