So much for a salary cap. Toronto FC has a salary of $22.4 million for 2017 while more than half of the league isn't even at $9 million. http://www.denverpost.com/2017/04/25/mls-team-payrolls-2017/ As a TFC fan I'm happy to be watching the best soccer on the continent. But is MLS in danger of becoming another UEFA style league where 2 or 3 teams just spend their way to championships every year and the rest of the teams and fans know they have no chance of ever winning?
MLS doesn't have a salary cap. TFC has had years when they have been in the top 3 in spending and been woeful. We haven't won one single MLS Cup championship yet so how can you possibly think other teams have no chance of winning?
We are on pace of breaking the record for most points in a season. The Supporters Shield is just a matter of games away. My question was more long term. Will MLS be a league of haves and have nots like the big leagues in Europe?
1998 Los Angeles Galaxy the team Toronto FC is trying to pass didn't win MLS CUP that year. Just saying. The team with the most points best team in the regular season doesn't always win the CUP.
First team in MLS history to win a treble. Check. Most points in a single season. Check. They got even better this offseason with some key signings.
Why would you bump this old, bad thread again? Don't be one of the embarrassing arrogant types of fans.
I'm pointing out that MLS is now a UEFA type league where money buys dynasties. And why not be arrogant? Soccer and chatting about soccer is just for entertainment. So why not have fun with it?
You don't have a dynasty yet. Toronto FC missed the playoffs in 2014, was the bottom playoff club in 2015, and had the fifth most points in 2016.
2017 was the beginning as dynasties start with the first championship. Look at the roster now. Even better than last year.
Now far be it for me to defend TFC, but didnt Giovinco miss a decent stretch last season with TFC just continuing to roll along?
So with the addition of TAM/GAM ($1,200,000), DTAM ($2,400,000) and $4,000,000 budget (?) the salary/budget cap is around $7,600,000 (or you could go as high as $8,800,000 if you use 2019 TAM/GAM). It will show which owners are going for it and which ones are not.
Some pretty good signings so far in 2018. LAFC and Atlanta are definitely in the arms race. https://www.si.com/soccer/photo/2018/02/06/mls-new-stars-2018-season#5
NOBODY fears TFC. They’re probably the best team in the league, and they have the target on their backs, but this is MLS. Nobody is untouchable. Both of their two-legged series were incredibly close, and MLS Cup was a one-goal game deep into stoppage time. They’re pretty good. Now slow your roll.
2-0 gets you into O.T. If your players could actually finish then maybe. Odds are TFC won't be losing 2-0 at home.
