Not sure. I’m assuming the 4th pick was traded to Chicago long ago based on condition. And Utah wanted to get back into the first round so they traded some money to get at least to 8th pick.
And also another poster mentioned that Chicago had too many first round picks so Chicago wanted to get some players or money in return.
https://www.nwslsoccer.com/news/art...st-of-players-eligible-for-2020-college-draft Doesn’t seem to include Smith, Sanchez or Weaver though.
Yes, although UCLA has announced that Sanchez is leaving and will be in the draft. I'm wondering if something's underway that is delaying release of the final draft eligible list, maybe some negotiations that might affect whether a player will enter the draft or not?
I have concerns about Sanchez's effectiveness at the next level. Sanchez can be easily neutralized and has to defend better to be a factor at the next level.
https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-articles/2020-nwsl-college-draft-big-board_aid47539 TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY!!!
3 years I've watched how Stanford neutralized Sanchez, and that's by a physically-average college team. NWSL is probably faster and more physical league. Watch Sanchez and her shambolic defending at the College Cup. Needs to show up in big games.
My quick estimate is 246 names on the draftee list. Seems to me that's a lot more than previous years, but maybe not. So, 36 players will be drafted out of about 246. Out of the 36 drafted maybe one-half will make a team. The odds are probably 100 to 1 of an undrafted player making a team. But dreams don't die -- and some will try, and one or two will make it. Like Bethany Balcer did.
Several NWSL teams also have reserve teams in WPSL, so that's also an option. If a player isn't good enough for NWSL, I'm not sure if they'll be able to land a good salary overseas either. But who knows? NWSL clubs needs to invest in proper reserve teams, but that's hard to do in WPSL where essentially every team has to remain NCAA-compliant. It would be easier to have professional reserves in UWS, but there doesn't seem to be much synergy between NWSL and UWS, unfortunately. Also, welcome to the NWSL boards, @cachundo !
Through together one more mock draft since I’ll be sneaking in the draft from work tomorrow. 1.Portland (via Orl) - Sophia Smith 2.Sky Blue - Ashley Sanchez 3.Sky Blue (via Hou,Chi) - Ally Watt 4.Chicago (via Utah) - Evelyne Viens 5.Chicago (via Wash) - Kaleigh Riehl 6.North Carolina (via Sea,Chi) - Tziarra King 7.Orlando (via Port) - Morgan Weaver 8.Utah (via Chi) - Taylor Kornieck 9.Seattle (via NC,Chi) - Kelcie Hedge 10.Orlando - Phoebe McClernon 11.Sky Blue - Courtney Petersen 12.Utah (via Hou) - Sinclaire Miramontez 13.Sky Blue (via Utah,Chi) - Zoe Morse 14.Orlando (via Wash,Port) - Kaiya McCullough 15.Portland (via Sea) - Ella Stevens 16.Portland - Aerial Chavarin 17.Chicago - Dani Rhodes 18.Houston (via NC,Chi) - Natalie Jacobs
These teams must not think too highly of this draft class considering how often these high draft spots are been traded
Ashley Sanchez looked pissed going 4th to Washington Spirit. I don't blame her, I hope she's traded to a better team.
1st round: 1. Portland - Sophia Smith 2. Portland - Morgan Weaver 3. Orlando - Taylor Kornieck 4. Washington - Ashley Sanchez 5. New Jersey - Evelyn Viens
6. N. Carolina - Ally Watt 7. Orlando - Courtney Petersen 8. Utah - Tziarra King 9. Seattle - Kelcie Hedge . End of the 1st round.
