Academica SC (CA) PPD Fourth Qualifying Round: March 9-10, 2019 (if necessary) Fifth Qualifying Round: April 6-7, 2019 (if necessary)
Why can't decide on how many clubs and rounds there will be so they don't need to say "if necessary"? Now they added a possible Fifth Qualifying Round.
Because the Brooklyn Italians didn't like the result of the draw and decided to take matters into their own hands. "What kinda mamaluke pulls this kinda sh!t anyways? You got dis guy from the USSF Open Cup Scheduling Committee standing around with his dick in his hand like a ja-jooch, and I ask him, how many rounds we gonna play. An he goes t'me, he goes, 'it depends' It depends? Whaaadafaaak! So I asks him again, dis time with Louie the Chin and his stugatz brudda, Psycho Joey, standin' next to me, just so he might have a little more, you know, incentive to answer this time. So he sez, 'are you talkin' about the Open Cup Proper or just the preliminary rounds? Be specific.' Be pacific? My yass! If you don't shaddup, yaw gonna be swimmin' in the Atlantic!"

I'll put the Canadian Championship in this thread as well. The 2019 Canadian Championship format is out. https://www.canadasoccer.com/canada...-and-24-matches-p161994-preview-1&language=en As expected there will be 13 teams participating. It is a home-and-away tournament throughout with away goals as a tie-breaker but no extra time. Matches will go straight to PKs if even after the two legs. 1st Qualifying Round May 15 and 22 AS Blainville (PLSQ) Vaughn Azzurri (OL1) Cavalry FC (CPL) HFX Wanderers (CPL) Pacific FC (CPL) York 9 FC (CPL) 2nd Qualifying Round June 5 and 12 The three 1st Qualifying Round winners plus, FC Edmonton (CPL) Forge FC (CPL) Valour FC (CPL) 3rd Qualifying Round July 10 and 24 The three 2nd Qualifying Round winners plus, Ottawa Fury (USL-C) Montreal Impact (MLS) Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS) Semifinals August 7 and 14 The three 3rd Qualifying Round winners plus, FC Toronto (MLS) Finals September 18 and 25 The semifinal winners face off.
Crazy that Toronto only has to play 4 games. I wonder if CPL expands and they end up with 16 teams (11 CPL, 3 MLS, 1 PLSQ, and 1 L1O) if they'll go to a straight single-leg knockout tournament.
It is more teams now, of course, but in the past 4 games to win the title was normal for the MLS teams up there. I'd be surprised if they go away from home-and-away. It is more likely that they stick with the current system at least in the near future. With 16 teams and presuming that Ottawa is a CPL team in the future they will probably go like this: 1st Qualifying Round 2 amateur teams 8 CPL teams 2nd Qualifying Round The five 1st Qualifying Round winners plus, 3 CPL teams 3rd Qualifying Round The four 2nd Qualifying Round winners plus, 2 MLS teams Semifinals The three 3rd Qualifying Round winners plus, 1 MLS team Finals The semifinal winners face off. That is just a slight variation of this year with very few teams playing more games. From what they've said they want the CPL teams play more games outside of the league at least at this point. Reportedly they aren't going to have league playoffs. If the CPL goes bigger than 11 teams then they just have the amateur teams play a round to get in the tournament. If the CPL really expands or they really do start a CPL-2 then that's when you might see changes.
Two questions: Is that the same FC Edmonton from the NASL and was there any reason Valour and Forge got auto spots in the second round?
Yes, it is the same Edmonton FC from the NASL. The entry round positioning was done by the CSA sort off on a seniority system. Valour and Forge were the earliest teams to join the CPL so they got to wait until the 2nd round.
For sure, I get that they are the champions, but they should play at least 6 games, hopefully it is just for a year or 2 (then again the CPL may collapse after a year or 2).
With 16 clubs, I'd prefer 8 enter in Round 1, 4 enter in Round 2, and 4 enter in Round 3, which would be the Quarterfinals. The last 4 clubs to enter could be the MLS clubs and the CPL champion, thus giving the CPL clubs a chance to start as late as the MLS clubs. I don't like the term "Qualifying Round." I think that term should only be used if there are more rounds after the last qualifying round. For example, the UEFA Champions League has 5 rounds after the Playoff (final qualifying) Round, and the English FA Cup has 8 rounds after Qualifying Round 4 (the last qualifying round). I'm not complaining about you because you're just using the round names from the CSA.
Sure. That would work as well. I just threw my plan together to keep it as similar as I could to what they've done recently. And to keep home-and-away match-ups. My main point was that they are unlikely to go to an even 16 team bracket with single knockout games as was suggested.
TheCup.us is reporting on twitter that the number of teams in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup will be reduced from previous years. Just 84 this year after almost 100 in 2017 and 2018. According to @JohnPMotta, open division entries for #USOC2019 have been confirmed. Last year, there were 55 entries (20 PDL, 22 NPSL,, 13 Local)...for 2019, it has been cut to 32. Format should look like this: MLS : 21USL Champ: 25USL 1: 6USL 2 (PDL): 10NPSL: 14Local: 8 pic.twitter.com/4nDed0ecuY— TheCup.us (@usopencup) January 11, 2019 It looks like Round 1: 8 LQ + 14 NPSL + 10 USL-2 + 6 USL-1= 38 teams Round 2: 25 USL-C teams enter against 19 winners Round 3: 22 winners play off Round 4: 21 MLS teams enter against 11 winners.
84 clubs would be the fewest since 2014. Does the amount of teams tell us how many qualifying rounds there will be as opposed to there being a Fourth Qualifying Round and Fifth Qualifying Round if necessary?
One more 3rd round match is complete. One more to go: 2019 USOC - Qualifying Tournament Home team first, times are CT 3rd Round Central Region Saturday, January 12 Motagua New Orleans (LA) 1-1 (pks 9-10) NTX Rayados (TX) Mountain Region Sunday, December 2 FC Denver (CO) 4-1 Gam United Football Club (CO) Southern California Region Wednesday, January 16 Cal FC (CA) v. California United FC II (CA) 10:00 pm West Region Saturday, January 5 Oakland Stompers (CA) 0-1 Academica SC (CA) Fourth Qualifying Round: April 6-7, 2019
The USSF had already announced that there will be a 4th Qualifying Round on April 6-7. That will reduce the Local Qualifiers to 8 teams, one from each region and Milwaukee Bavarians SC who won the 2018 USASA National Championship.
The USSF has not actually announced this plan yet. They may give some rationale when they do. There is some reporting that the two main factors are a lack of available dates and the increase in the number of professional teams. There were only 42 pro division teams in the tournament last year. That number is now up to 52.
The 3rd Round is now complete: 2019 USOC - Qualifying Tournament Home team first, times are ET 3rd Round Central Region Saturday, January 12 Motagua New Orleans (LA) 1-1 (pks 9-10) NTX Rayados (TX) Mountain Region Sunday, December 2 FC Denver (CO) 4-1 Gam United Football Club (CO) Southern California Region Wednesday, January 16 Cal FC (CA) 1-1 (pks 7-6) California United FC II (CA) West Region Saturday, January 5 Oakland Stompers (CA) 0-1 Academica SC (CA) Fourth Qualifying Round: April 6-7, 2019
