Good teams win on the road and fear no team. Last time the Quakes closed the season in Portland they were Supporters Shield champions, as I recall. Seems like a good omen to me.
In 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2018 we finished the season on the road, all were losses, and we didn't make that playoffs in any of those years. Looks like a bad omen to me.
Uh oh https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2019/01/07/2019-strength-schedule-rankings-who-has-toughest-schedule Below you'll find the complete table, calculated by taking the 2018 average points per game at home and on the road for each team's opponent. The figures are even closer than usual, as an extra conference matchup that could sway averages has been eliminated.
The main thing that chart tells you is that the Quakes are the only team in the Western Conference that doesn't play against San Jose.
Quakes appear to have most Saturday dates and among fewest weekday dates. Some schedule analysis, brought to you by people who over analyze things and Microsoft Excel. First up, days of the week for home gamesDC with the uncommon Tuesday game, 9 Thursday games, total of 72 midweek games (not Fri-Sun) pic.twitter.com/5xAJRRp2pw— SoccerPhotogrammetry AKA "A Nice Gentleman" (@OffsideModeling) January 8, 2019
Least non-Saturday games in several years... The flip side to that is that the San Jose Earthquakes is the team the league least wants to show off nationally this season. GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Perhaps the Quakes pointed out to the league the terrible weekday bay area traffic and how it impacts our attendance.
Agreed. I assume the feedback from fans was for more Saturdays, and the Quakes made a determined effort with the league to maximize attendance.
We have 9 nationally televised games which is more than many teams have. They are all Univision - no Fox or ESPN. For some reason Univision just really loves the Quakes I guess.
I'm guessing Almeyda is a big reason for this... some people may not understand how big the Chivas fanbase is, it's massive. http://soccerly.com/article/bryan/most-valuable-liga-mx-clubs-according-to-forbes Chivas of Guadalajara were the first on the list with a value of $328.1 million USD. Owned by the always controversial Jorge Vergara, Chivas are the team with one of the most cemented brands in Mexican soccer and with the most fans spread throughout the world. http://remezcla.com/sports/chivas-tops-jersey-sales/
Growing up in America, there are certain things you take for granted. Saturday morning cartoons, year-round access to seasonal produce, quads, etc. You also expect -- nay, know -- that the Harlem Globetrotters will always beat their green and yellow patsies: the lowly Washington Generals. https://www.sportsgrid.com/basketba...ber-the-one-time-the-washington-generals-won/
Haha. Got it! We make the highlight reels. “Graham Zusi for president “ - as Zusi scores on you know who and the clip is literally played during every MLS game. Who says we aren’t nationally televised?
Thanks for tracking that! However, note that for our 15 Sat home games, 9 are at night with KO between 6:30-7:15 PM 2 KO at 4:45 PM 3 KO at 12:30 PM
I would have to think Fisher or Quakes representatives did some complaining to the league about midweek games. While the team did itself no favors for attendance by being awful, midweek games are most definitely less attractive to fans. I doubt San Jose are the only team negatively affected by them, of course. The other thing about random midweek games is that people just flat don't know about them, I'd wager. When you typically play on Saturday, it really throws you off when some random game in the middle of the season is on a Wednesday instead. This should also help with schedule congestion, which is a good thing. It's been getting ridiculous over the last several years.
Midweek games may be a bummer anywhere but they are a catastrophe in San Jose/Santa Clara due to Silicon Valley commute traffic. I work about 5 miles from the stadium and it can take 45 minutes to get from the office to parking on a Wednesday afternoon/evening.
