81' 1-0 Balcer drives at Brooks at 24m arc left, fakes a veer-left and instead veers right, leaves Brooks stationary behind her. Balcer shoots from ~arc top, Murray deflects it off her right ankle and over endline right.

82' 1-0 Fishlock right ck, to 1m 1/5 left, Campbell catches high. Attendance 3,063 -- pretty consistent for Cheney Stadium.

84' 1-0 Reign FC subs in (3 of 3) #44 Maegan Kelly for #24 Bethany Balcer.

87' 1-0 K.Mewis dribbles in a seam to 24m mid-right, shoots left foot on the run, just over bar center.

90' 1-1 Ohai touches back to box top mid-right, slices a cross toward Fields at 12m mid-right, Westphal chests ball to box top. Hanson pokes ball forward, it rattles off Westphal's shins and sits loose behind Hanson's momentum, Proffitt kicks it out to arc top right post. Nairn settles and shoots right foot past Murphy's dive, just inside right post low. That was Houston's best build-up all day, as Reign FC were in a prevent defense and somehow left everybody unmarked. +2'.

    FT 1-1.

03' 0-0 Brynjarsdóttir jumping back-header at 22m center drops through box top center to 12m 1/3 right. Purce runs on from arc left, shoots one-touch right instep over Boyd, off crossbar center, ball bounces up and away past circle top.

08' 0-0 Short fouls Purce just above box top left. Klingenberg fk, nothing ensues.

13' 0-0 Nagasato dribbles 3-v-4 to 25m mid-right, has K.Johnson at box top ahead of her -- instead tries a long shot, gets only half power.

That looked offsides to me, but I wish I could see a better replay.

20' 0-0 DiBernardo long ground pass to arc left for Vasconcelos cutting right-to-center. Vasconcelos shoots one-touch left instep, Klingenberg slides and blocks over endline left.

21' 0-0 Chicago left ck inswings to 3m center, Brynjarsdóttir heads it across through 6-right, gets bumped down by Short? Foul on Chicago.

24' 0-0 Klingenberg(?) crosses to 9m 6-right, Charley heads down toward left post. Ball kicks leftward on the bounce, Boyd dives right and catches.

25' 0-0 K.Johnson taps right to Short at 18m mid-right. Short shoots right foot hard across mouth, just wide left low.

22' 0-0 Charley receives in stride, through-ball to Purce but offside.

27' 1-0 Crnogorčević passes to Charley at 27m mid-right. Charley veers to 25m 6-right, this time Purce stays right up against the backline's edge at 22m right post, pointing at her spot. Charley rolls a perfect vertical pass through arc right to Naughton's right, Purce back-cuts her on her left and wins that race. Boyd dives out through 8m right post, Purce hops over her to 3m 6-right, pulls a shot to right post low, Naughton slides and pokes it into own right back edge. That was going in regardless, so it's a goal for Purce.

31' 2-0 Salem chips to Charley 1-v-1 on Gorden at 24m box left. Charley lift-flicks the up-bounce over Gorden, outsprints her down box left to 5m, turns back to 7m. Cross to 5m center, Purce is unmarked thereat (as Wright went to left post instead). Left instep low volley putt under Boyd's left hand into back right low. Portland are scoring faster than NWSL can tweet :barefoot:

40' 2-0 Colaprico touches to her right at 24m arc left, Salem steps that way to interpose and plants, Colaprico cuts back, Salem goes down, holding left knee  Stoppage, all others get water.

43' 2-0 Salem is stretchered off ... and directly down the tunnel?
43' 2-0 Portland subs in (1 of 3) #30 Celeste Boureille for #36 Angela Salem.

45+3' (of +4') 2-0 Brynjarsdóttir receives a driven ball to the solar plexus? Stoppage, trainer makes her lie back, then she walks into near touch -- in the shade :)

49+5' (of +4') 2-0 Portland release to Purce at circle left -- Charley is 1/2 step offside ahead of her, but Charley stops her run and her defender pulls level, onside again. Purce waits for that, chips long over both and Charley starts her sprint -- but ball sails too far ahead, Boyd collects at 15m.

    HT 2-0.

46' 2-0 Charley dribbles through arc top mid-right, taps wide right to Purce, continues her own run toward 6-top. Purce snipes a one-touch cross from 14m wide right to 7m 4-right, Charley hops between 2 and glance-heads across mouth, just wide left.

53' 2-0 Chicago through-ball down mid-left, Nagasato overtakes Reynolds at 1m and Reynolds pokes ball over.

54' 2-0 Vasconcelos goes 1-v-1 on Boureille down box right, cross blocked over. Colaprico right ck to 6m 4-right, K.Johnson back-heads just wide left.

55' 2-0 K.Johnson(?) takes Reynolds down wide left twice, wins a throw-in and a corner. Chicago are investing a lot into this early 2H pressure, Portland seem content to defend.

56' 2-0 Colaprico left ck, to 3m left post. Boyd doesn't come to ball, Wright jumps across her front and heads off crossbar, ball bounces away and Portland clear.

58' 2-0 DiBernardo passes to Short at 10m wide right, quick cross through 6-center, again Boyd waits to catch. Wright hops across her front and misses (maybe grazes her on the way by?), Boyd catches face-high, Wright continues into goal back right. Wow, both Wright and Short are that high up on Chicago's attacks. Actually, Chicago are now in a 3-4-3?

68' 2-0 Portland subs in (2 of 3) #34 Tyler Lussi for #23 Midge Purce. Attendance 19,461 = Thorns home opener record.

71' 2-0 Wright outruns Ball down mid-left, backheels ball off Ball's shins? Ball lets ball roll over endline, R1 gives a corner, all boo.

75' 2-0 Crnogorčević passes down wide left to Charley. Cross to 4m 1/3 right, Naughton(?) heads away and Lussi jumps into her. Foul on Lussi.

76' 2-0 Chicago subs in (1 of 3) #15 Maria Sánchez for #7 Michele Vasconcelos.

78' 2-0 Portland subs in (3 of 3) #40 Marissa Everett for #38 Simone Charley.
80' 2-0 Chicago subs in (2 of 3) #28 Kayla Sharples for #33 Katlyn Johnson.

82' 2-0 DiBernardo knocks heads(?) with Brynjarsdóttir at circle top. Foul, stoppage, Brynjarsdóttir stays down on back.

83' 2-0 Trainer applies a protocol? Brynjarsdóttir is sitting up, with water bottle.
84' 2-0 Trainer pulls Brynjarsdóttir up, she walks into near touch.

84' 2-0 Chicago subs in (3 of 3) #23 Brooke Elby for #5 Katie Naughton. Portland resumes with 10, Brynjarsdóttir waits by 4R.

85' 2-0 Elby flattens Klingenberg(?) at 25m wide left. Brynjarsdóttir returns.

85' 3-0 Klingenberg fk at 25m wide left, right instep inswings to 10m left post. Everett breaks free past the inside edge of the scrum, body-traps ball off one bounce and deflects it into wheelhouse. Instant spin-ccw and left roundhouse low volley to goalline 1/4 left leaks through Boyd's legs, into center back low. Everett's 1st goal!

90+3' (of +3') 3-0 Boureille counters through box top mid-right, diagonal pass to Everett alone at 6-top 2/5 left. Boyd goes low, Everett chips waaaay over the bar.

90+4' (of +3') 3-0 Boureille jumps for a header in circle back, Sharples jumps and leans for a driven-header try, gets all of Boureille's rear skull. Foul, yellow card on Sharples. Stoppage, Boureille walks off.

90+6' (of +3') 3-0 Klingenberg fk at circle top wide left, down wide left. Chicago intercept, and that's that.

    FT 3-0.

I think the starting left back on the USWNT should be Meghan Klingenberg.

Chicago simply couldn't break through the Portland back line. Nearly all the shots were by midfielders at long distance or on set plays. 28 shots, no goals, is pretty dismal. "Where have you gone, Sam Kerr? Chicago turns its lonely eyes to you."

I would start Maria Sanchez next game as left flank winger. She's not as fast as Vasconcelos, but her left foot, dribbling skills, and ability to cross the ball would be an asset for Chicago.

Given the quality of Washington's game at present, I wonder if Lavelle and Pugh can break into the starting lineup when they return from the World Cup?

    Okay, that's facetious.

I will admit - along with just about everyone who's paid to cover & analyze the NWSL - that DC has been the surprise of the season so far. I think you're a notable exception in being an early predictor of them doing well.
