Two schools of though on that. Jürgen Klinsmann took all the throwins for Germany. His though was that the person who throws is unmarked, and likely to get the ball back.

06' 1-0 Rodriguez counters through circle center, kicks long to Lloyd in a 2-v-3 pincers at 30m box right, 1/2 step ahead of Reynolds. Lloyd dribbles strongly to 9m 6-right, shoots right foot across mouth, Sonnett slides to block, ball deflects off Sonnett's left hip and into back left edge.

18' 2-0 Franch gk(?), Carpenter(?) bad backpass misses Sonnett. Lloyd poaches in front of Sonnett at arc top mid-left, Franch comes out to 12m 8-left and sprawls down, Lloyd cuts left and hops her to 6m mid-left. Franch scrambles back toward 10m, Lloyd runs around ball and chips over Sonnett, perfectly into back right low.

32' 2-1 Heath fk at 28m center, soft scoop to 9m 1/3 left. Brynjarsdóttir slide-stretches and ball deflects off her foottop leftward, hits Sinclair's right hip at 3m left post and stops amidst traffic. Sinclair pokes ball past Sheridan going down, to Sonnett unmarked at 4m center, Sonnett winds up and blasts in.

34' 2-2 Carpenter passes up right touch to Foord at box top wide right. Foord creeps down to 11m wide right, swings a cross to 7m center. Heath jumps between Monaghan and Skroski, twists aloft to face away, chests ball down between own feet, lands facing away at 5m 1/5 right. Ball rolls between Heath's feet, Sheridan steps forward, Heath lifts right foot and backheels under Sheridan's left leg, into back right low.

45+2' (of +1') 2-2 Heath fk at circle top box right, sailed long over 8m 1/4 left, Crnogorčević backpedals in traffic but isn't that tall. Ball bounces untouched at 5m 1/4 left, bounces up to left post 2/3 high, Sheridan flies across and pushes it over left 90.

    HT 2-2.

Angles mean nothing to Crystal Dunn.

45+1' (of +1') 0-1 Dahlkemper longball from circle top wide right to 7m 5-left. McDonald leaps and heads downward, ball bounces up to 3m 1/4 left. Brooks twist-heads a pop-up, Campbell sprawls down, ball drops at 1m center high. Ln.Williams outjumps Brooks, nods into back left roof.

    HT 0-1.

60' 0-2 Hinkle passes to Dunn facing away at 22m wide left. Murray steps up tightly against Dunn's back, Dunn spins cw and outraces her to 9m box left. Campbell slides across to left post, McDonald and Ln.Williams make their runs to 6-top (center and 3-right, respectively). Dunn snipes left instep on the run, lobs Campbell's fingertips, across goalmouth, off back of right post, bounces in along right side netting.

69' 0-3 Dunn passes down wide left to Hinkle way up at 12m. Murray rushes out to close, Hinkle darts past her to 2m mid-left. Floated cross to 3m left post rising, Campbell leaps out and pushes it away to 12m 6-right. Debinha settles ball unmarked, blasts right foot into center back 1/2 high, past Campbell's left hand as she couldn't get back through traffic.

77' 0-4 Debinha receives at circle back right, passes inside-out to circle top wide right -- and continues her run up right post lane. Ln.Williams bends her run outward to collect ball, Pruitt begins her supporting lope up left post lane, 1/2 step ahead of Murray. Brooks lunges at arc top box right, Ln.Williams touches past her and gets to 2m wide right. Pruitt pulls up at 9m 3-left, lets Murray overtake her (so she can watch Murray's back, but not vice versa). Ln.Williams bends a cross over Debinha jumping at 5m right post, Polkinghorne jumps with her. Ball drops at 6-top center, Pruitt backcuts hapless Murray left-to-center and stoop-heads down into 1/4 left back low, past Campbell's dive. Tough entry for Murray.

77' 0-4 Houston subs in (3 of 3) #17 Kyah Simon for #44 Satara Murray. Tough exit, too.

86' 1-4 S.Mewis holds in circle back, Simon comes back on her right flank. S.Mewis spins ccw away from Simon -- but trips over ball, and ball doesn't go with her  Simon promptly kicks long to 27m mid-right, Daly does a waist-high foot trap. Erceg goes for ball at box top mid-right, Daly cuts inside behind her, to 16m 8-right. Perfect left instep bend on the run, over Labbé's reach, into left side netting high. Highlight clip at 0:37 -- score a goal and we'll belly-rub this corgi --

    FT 1-4.

    The explanation is quite simple.

For a reminder, here is their starting lineup:

Notice Marta is playing left forward. And the LB is Carson Pickett. Despite being the LB, Pickett never does the throw-ins for one particular reason...

Houston's midfield was just completely outmatched in the game. Basically the only play Houston had was punt it to Daly (or sometimes Prince) and hope she could do something with it.

I told myself that I would keep a close eye on rookies this year. Thus far 8 draftees and one undrafted player have played significant minutes. That's not many -- but more will have opportunities now that the US NT players have departed.

So, IMHO, the three leading rookie of the year candidates thus far are:
    1. Davidson, Chi. Def. No expertise needed to pick her. By far the leading candidate.
    2. Balcer, Reign. Forward.. Undrafted, but impressive. She's a mad bomber with 9 shots in less that two full games.
    3. Pruitt,. NC. Forward. Impressive in three appearances as a sub.

Paige Monaghan of Sky Blue has impressed me. She's had two energetic stints as a offensive sub and played a full 90 as a right back against Portland. She improved as the match went on, and did a pretty good job corralling Tobin Heath.

Washington has a trio -- DiBiasi, McGrady, and Staab -- of rookies who are playing 90 minutes a match.

Is the Michelle Maemone we were talking about earlier in this thread a rookie too?

She is. A third round draft choice. I guess next to Balcer, she is the biggest rookie surprise of the season so far. .
