CHI : ORL 63' - Sibiga sends off player for DOGSO. Pretty easy call.

But he still went over and looked at it to confirm the red. I just don't understand why he even went over to the monitor. It's an easy red.

So did the VAR recommend a review for a clear error or did Sibiga decide to look at it again?

I’m guessing that one fell on Gonzalez. It wasn’t good. Confirming a tough call is one thing. Sowing on-field doubts on a textbook call? No thanks.

I liked the use of VAR to downgrade the Gantar card. That was well done. Just hope the same thought process and standard gets used in the other direction.

Hypothetical question on the first Seattle goal last night:

    https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/m...rs-fc-vs-colorado-rapids/details/video/184067

After the cross to the center of the box its hard to tell if the Seattle attacker or the Colorado defender touches the ball towards goal. The hypothetical is "lets assume the Seattle attacker is the one who touched it". Given that, would you consider Morris offside when he attempts to stab the ball back towards the eventual goal-scorer at the top of the box? I don't think Morris touches the ball, but he does make a close play on it between Howard and the Colorado defender.

(To be clear, I'm not claiming the refs got this call wrong or it was a bad call. It went to VAR and I'm assuming they decided it was the Colorado defender with the last touch before Morris tried to play it, and Morris was not offside on the initial cross into the box)

I haven't been able to freeze frame it, but there's a chance COL #4 is keeping him onside even if there is a touch by a teammate there.

Anyone else catch the AR in the Atlanta v Cincinnati game give the forbidden “over and back” hand gesture after an offside around the 83rd min?

You’ll get some assessors and people give you crap about it because it’s not “official”. I should have put the eye roll emoji because I too use it as well.

Karma for me though I clicked away from the game to post that and missed the tieing goal. :(

Well I had an assessor get on me for not running enough of a diagonal. Needless to say he was an older fellow and probably isn't really up to date on the modern movement guidance.

You take the good with the bad. I just thought it was funny to see in an MLS game. Wish they would have replayed the call because he must have come from pretty far off.

It was a strange one, but he played it about 3.5 seconds after the goalkeeper kicked it. The two players missing the header made it a strange situation.

Sooo, what's the correct call for a player flicking an opponents ear off the ball while play is ongoing?

Chara sent off for, get this, an off the ball ear flick. Box score says 2CT, but surely that should be VC? I'm checking to see if the box is correct.

It was. Marrufo spotted it live and gave the 2CT. Didn't we recently have the discussion on whether it's worth it for VAR to intervene on a 2CT to upgrade it to VC? In this case, I guess you could argue that the force was negligible?...

I really can’t wait until it goes the other way. Where a VC red is wrongly given but a yellow is necessary and it means a 2CT anyway. I think I want it to happen week one in the EPL next year.

If the force was truly "negligible," there's probably an argument that it wasn't misconduct at all, but this clearly is.
And yeah, Rossi's sell job is embarrassing. He deserves a fine.

I think that we had one of those a few weeks back in a game in Europe, no? Maybe in the Netherlands?

It was SFP, downgraded to YC... which was the guy's second YC.

    Not quite.

It was given as a 2CT and the VAR pinged the referee to say it was clearly a VC stamp. So the player was brought back on, the yellow was canceled, he thought he was staying on the field, and then the red was shown. That all happened because the player (and his team) naively thought the yellow card could be reviewed. It couldn't and wasn't. The yellow was always, at minimum, staying. The only question was whether or not it was getting upgraded.

So in that scenario, the player is getting sent off anyway.

I'm imagining the other scenario where a VC or SFP send off gets reviewed because it's clearly wrong, the referee agrees, but it's still a yellow and the player is already on a yellow. So that player would be brought back on the field, the red would be annulled, he'd then be shown a yellow, and then again shown the red. It will be farcical and glorious.

Interesting (correct) red card given via VAR and Penso in the Philadelphia vs. Sporting KC match to Fabian.

I'm glad that VAR sent that down.

Couple of questions I have. From the video, Penso originally called the foul on the field so how did he not see show the red card himself? I guess he just didn't see it... It wasn't like if Russell got tripped or fouled normally and then stamped on. He just got stamped on. There was nothing else. If he didn't see the stamp, what did he see to just call a foul?

The other and more pertinent question is this play enough for VAR to get involved in a FIFA competition or the CL?

From what we saw the World Cup, the answer is "no." The same Argentine player kicked the ball at a prone player after the whistle was blown twice and VAR did nothing. So I'm assuming there is enough doubt that this was "accidental" in the eyes of FIFA.

UEFA better hope they get a punch or De Jong style tackle to the chest as their first red card for SFP or VC via VAR.

Give credit to the commentator for recognizing that it was a dirty play. Usually, you'll see them babble on with "did he mean it? did he know what he was doing?"
