This Ecuadorean league match in Miami has sparked a lawsuit: Eager to expand beyond exhibition matches, Relevent has spent months trying to bring a competitive match to the United States, similar to how the N.F.L. and N.B.A. stage games abroad each season. Thwarted in its efforts to bring a Spanish league match to America in January, Relevent’s latest attempt is an Ecuadorean first-division match between Barcelona S.C. and Guayaquil City, scheduled for May 5 in Miami. The sanctioning process for that match prompted the lawsuit. Relevent has written approval for the match from both Ecuador’s soccer federation and Conmebol, the governing body for soccer in South America, but according to the lawsuit, U.S. Soccer has refused to sanction the game. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/22/sports/relevent-sports-us-soccer-lawsuit.html

That is interesting. One of the most Iconic American Football fields hosting a soccer match between English and German clubs??? The Gipper and Knute Rockne are probably turning over in their graves as I type this. (But I love it.)
Even if the USSF isn't following their own regulations, that isn't enough for a judge to order the USSF to sanction the game. The lawsuit says: "UNITED STATES SOCCER FEDERATION,INC., a corporation existing under the laws of the State of New York" That surprises me because I assumed that it would deal with federal law, not state law, and even if it is about state law neither the USSF headquarters nor the proposed site are in New York. Oral arguments are scheduled for May 23, which means the game cannot be played on May 5 unless Relevent attempts to play an unsanctioned game and the USSF doesn't stop them. https://hardrockstadium.com/events/ does not list the game. Tickets need to be sold, and if tickets are sold for an unsanctioned game, the USSF can tell the venue to cease and desist (or something like that) selling tickets. Furthermore, if a venue sells tickets for a game they know is unsanctioned, even if it isn't played, Relevent and/or the venue could be sued by the USSF. ESPN says the game will be on May 5 at 7:00 P.M. in Ecuador. Will the lawsuit be moot by May 23? If the lawsuit is moot about this game, would Relevent attempt to make a general argument that the USSF should be required to sanction whatever Relevent wants? I wonder if a judge ruling in favor of Relevent would be what FIFA calls "government interference." In this case it would be interference instigated by a third party.

501(c)(3)s are incorporated and governed under state law. USSF originated in New York, which is my guess as to why they were incorproated there.
