"Silver" means second best, but as of now the Red Bulls are second in the East with more points than anybody in the West.
Meh. The West seems to be more competitive and that might play into just how many points the top of the East has. While it is true that the NYRB have the second most points in the league, only the top 3 clubs in the East would make the playoffs in the West..
I think we're fine with "Eastern/Western Conference Winner". Though it's kinda weird that MLS recognises the team with the best record as the conference champ but gives the conference trophy to the team that reaches MLS Cup.
Are you sure that the trophy winner isn't the conference champ. Can you link to where they changed this
MLS does not recognize the regular season points leader as the conference champ. That distinction, along with the trophy, is given to the team that wins the conference playoffs. The two-game series before MLS Cup is labeled the "Conference Championship". The team with the overall best record in the league is recognized by the league as Supporter Shield winner. The CCL spot does go to the team in each conference with the best record but MLS does not call them conference champions.
How many teams have won multiple different conference championship trophies? I believe Chicago has won all 3 (East, Central, West), Colorado has won East and West, I think KC has too. Houston?
Houston has two Western Conference titles and two Eastern Conference titles. The Dynamo have played in the conference finals seven times total in 12 seasons: 4 in the West and 3 in the East. As a matter of fact Houston beat Kansas City in the conference finals in both the West and the East. Kansas City has won both as well: the West in 2000 and 2004, the East in 2013.
TIL yall had a Central Conference. So, our English friend, the reg season winners still don't have a name. Give em a name. Silver means 2nd, so it applies since the team is 2nd among conf pts leaders. Silver Shield or SS Jr. sound good.
I stand corrected. Wikipedia failed me with its list of conference regular season champions. Might I suggest the Eric Wynalda Shield. Because no matter how successful you might feel you've been, history isn't going to give a sh**.
By that logic Manchester City could be the second best club in the world based on domestic league performance because the worse of Barcelona and Real Madrid wouldn't get a chance to be second in the world.
Looking at the overall table for the past two years, and correct me if I'm wrong, but as long as Atlanta ties the Red Bulls this weekend they're in the champions league for next year right? I'm seeing Atlanta on 118 points, NYR on 109 and NYC on 107. Assuming Atlanta ties their game against NYR and both the New York teams win out, that would leave all three teams on 119 points but Atlanta would have the edge on goal differential.
Right now: 1. ATL 64 g.p. 118 pts 34 w. +59 g.d. 2. NYR 64 g.p. 109 pts 32 w. +29 g.d. 3. NYC 64 g.p. 107 pts 30 w. +26 g.d. If, as you say, Atlanta and the Reds Bulls tie, and then Atlanta loses out and the NY teams win out then the totals would be: 1. ATL 68 g.p. 119 pts 34 w. +56 or lower g.d. 2. NYR 68 g.p. 119 pts 35 w. +32 or higher g.d. 3. NYC 68 g.p. 119 pts 33 w. +30 or higher g.d. The MLS tie-breakers are wins and then goal difference. I don't know for sure if that's what they will use in this situation but if so then the Red Bulls would win on games won.
https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017...hampions-league-qualifiers-are-determined-mls So they lay out the scenario of a three way tie, but don't mention what the next tiebreaker is after aggregate points...
I doubt if we will find out because a tie for first is very unlikely. Much more likely to have a tie for 2nd but that will only be relevant if KC, Atlanta, or possibly Philadelphia* wins MLS Cup this fall. *I'm not giving up on Houston winning the Open Cup on Wednesday but we are not making the playoffs.
If the Red Bulls finish second in combined points, they would qualify for the CCL if MLS Cup is between SKC and Atlanta. If Atlanta wins the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup is between SKC and NYCFC, MLS Cup would determine which NY club qualified for the CCL. If NYCFC beats the Red Bulls in the playoffs and loses later, and MLS Cup is won by SKC or Atlanta, the Red Bulls could have the last laugh on NYCFC by qualifying for the CCL.
I hope Atlanta United and RBNY get the two remaining spots for CCL. The clear weak link for MLS is Houston but that is what happens with the USOC.

Do you guys feel the CCL benefits smaller clubs from smaller leagues? Like how much cash do clubs from Honduras or T&T are allocated during the group stage?
No idea how much money teams get but there is no group stage in either the CONCACAF League or CONCACAF Champions League. EDIT: Here is the prize money for the CCL as far as I can find. $500,000 to the finals winner $300,000 to finals loser. $200,000 to the semifinals losers each. I don't see anything about teams that are eliminated in the Round of 16 or Quarterfinals. Teams do get ticket sales from their home games. That's probably it.
Damn! That is not much. So that is 1.2 million that CONCACAF gives out in prizes. I don't see how they expect for this area to grow when they themselves aren't giving any good incentives to do it. Other than the money, which it ain't much, the other thing that CCL offers is a ticket to the Club World Cup.
Doesn't FIFA also pay teams to compete in the cwc? So the CCL champion automatically gets paid for a minimum of one CWC game.
Minimum $1 million for the Concacaf representative. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_Club_World_Cup#Prize_money
