...when we'll have more proof MLS is absolutely catching up and threatening to overtake Liga MX, just like this year.
The Gap is closing. This time for real. https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/gap-closing-some-stores-in-canada-1.5039672
Beyond the fact that only some PKs go to sudden death, there's a difference between both teams attempting isolated shots in soccer or hockey and golden goal when it existed. A club can be leading a shootout after an equal or unequal amount of attempts without it being over. In extra time with a golden goal, a club can never lead without winning. Now that it isn't used in soccer, I don't know how many competitions in any sport in any country use golden goal. Without using the term "golden goal," that's what the NHL playoffs does in overtime. Some sports such as tennis and volleyball are defined as playing until a defined score is reached. Since both of them have rules requiring players or teams to win by 2, I don't think there's ever a time when both sides are simultaneously 1 point away from winning.
CONCACAF not keen to allow Liga MX back into Copa Libertadores: http://www.espn.com/soccer/major-le...al-over-liga-mx-mls-copa-libertadores-reports
Liga MX is the vache à lait in the continent, so they want to keep those revenues. With them competing in the Libertadores, a lot of eyes go that way and stop caring about the CONCACAF Champions --and let's be honest, the best soccer in CONCACAF is the MX liguilla, where each game is like a CCL semifinal. The South Americans want the Mexican market, even if many growl about allowing them in, but no one really cares about MLS down there. I think the only people mentioning having MLS clubs included in Libertadores are the US-based media. Maybe CONMEBOL would take them if they are a condition for MX to return. But I'd think at this point CONCACAF is going to do all within their power to stop it from happening. My prognostication: Mexico continues stuck with us, in this sort of huis clos where they have nothing to gain.
Good analysis. And it's why USSF and FMF and MLS and LigaMX continue to work more and more closely together. It's quickly become the U.S. and Mexico against the CFU with UNCAF and Canada on the sidelines, not particularly happy with the CFU, but also not wanting to lose the golden calf of Mexican and American TV money.
Pretty sure Liga MX clubs would still be required to compete in CCL. Mexicans would still watch their clubs and I doubt South Americans were watching CCL anyways You're leaving out that it was Liga MX that pulled out of the competition. Also, it seems that to go back to Libertadores, Liga MX would need to change their format to accommodate that competition http://www.espn.com/soccer/mexican-...orse-off-for-2017-copa-libertadores-exclusion Bonilla was asked whether Mexico could change the league format to one that complimented the Libertadores, but the Liga MX president said studies showed fans in Mexico like the two seasons per year schedule as it is Also, CONMEBOL denied the whole thing and reconfirmed the scheduling issue https://www.google.ca/amp/s/en.onef...ntroduce-mls-and-liga-mx-teams-after-all/amp/ Liga MX clubs took part in the Libertadores until 2015 but decided against continuing due to clashes between the South American and Mexican league calendars. “They withdrew and we never spoke again,” Domínguez continued. “The rumours constantly come from the Mexican press.” So it could be that CONCACAF already know it isn't happening (Talking to CONMEBOL and Liga MX) so he just reiterated that it won't happen, not so much as to block it at all costs. I would agree that both CCL & CL needs to be seriously revamp. The format and berths allocated makes it a joke
Colombians and Argentinians like it too... That's why we have 2 seasons per year. If the story is true it could be the dumbest scapegoat of all time.
IIRC Bonilla was talking specifically about the playoffs - back in the day, Liga MX sides lost money by chasing the Libertadores at the expense of the liguilla when those commitments would overlap, although I don't know if that's still the case with the considerable increase in Libertadores prizes.
Since the Lib Group Stage runs later into the year now, it conflicts with the MX playoffs. Which means all MX teams in that tourney would have this problem, as opposed to only the MX teams in KO stage, which was the case before. So that's why they withdrew. May be a legit reason from a certain POV
Confirmed: As revealed earlier, Qatar will host Club World Cup in December 2019 and December 2020 https://t.co/dRs8UB7scf— Rob Harris (@RobHarris) June 3, 2019 Final loose end of the 2019 CCL. Monterrey will get to play the CWC this year.
Very happy that the CWC will continue to exist for at least the next 2 years. I wonder what happened to the China hosting rumor... Good test for Qatar to host a semi-major soccer event.
China have their eyes on the expanded 2021 version. And they will most likely get it. (Alibaba are "presenting partners" of the CWC until 2022)
I would worry too much about it. To withdraw you'd have to qualify first ... and didn't see the Nats at the last World Cup ... or an MLS teams at the last Club World Cup either.
Well it is true that nothing should be taken for granted, however there is also no need to be so pessimistic. It is possible that the US Nats could qualify.
