Hey, you called it right. Although your choice for the Fire, Peter-Lee Vassell, did not go until the 16th pick in the second round (40th pick overall). Guess it's a good idea that we did not spend the 5th overall pick on him.
Taken by DC United at 14, so I guess No. 5 was too much and he was gone before No. 15. We have to wait until the "teleconference" on Monday to learn who are great Third Round picks will be. Any thoughts on those picks, based on who is still available?
Prosper Figbe. Centerback. I can see why everyone passed on him, he didn’t come in with much hype but he performed in the Combine well. Could be a good sleeper pick. Also a solid centerback is Mitch Osmand. Had a really up and down combine, but if you’re gonna take a flyer on someone, he’s the guy. Attacking side, Mbacke Thiam is a big guy out of UConn. Not as tall as Collier, but definitely more skilled.
Oh, please, yes. We need a guy named Prosper Figbe on the team. Every team needs a Prosper Figbe. What a name. Mbacke Thiam? Never heard of him, but that is not a surprise. I looked them up and my concern is either would be international players and we have a surplus already.
Ohio sucks. All they're good at is making a strangely high amount of astronauts. Somewhere in there is a joke about them getting as far from Ohio as possible, but I'm too tired to think it ip.
If you want a preview of my article that I have yet to start writing, my Winners and losers of Day one for the draft are: Winners: Philadelphia Union FC Dallas New England Revolution Atlanta United Losers: Chicago Fire Houston Dynamo New York City FC I'll probably say something about Sporks too, but I still have no clue what to think about their first round pick
Winner: Philadelphia Crap shoot: 22 teams Loser: Fire (a paltry $150,000 for two first round draft picks?)
We had a very bad crapshoot. There's a time and a place to trade all of your picks, but the Fire aren't in a position to be throwing away warm bodies. https://mlsmultiplex.com/2019/01/12/mls-superdraft-2019-day-one-winners-losers/
Im hearing that 150k in GAM is being used to buy Ojeda. If true , I don't know what this team is going to do about international roster slots.
Am I missing something? Philly got between $150-200k for 5 picks. How are they the winner if Chicago is the loser?
Philly has a full roster and trust in their academy. The Fire do not have an 18 and have academy players actively trying to leave the club. That's the main difference. It's not about the money, it's about the situation.
It all depends on what we do with the GAM, but we don't have a good history in using it. If I remember correctly, an international slot is worth about $200k in GAM?
I was more questioning counting Philly as a winner. They gave away more than the Fire did, and possibly ended up with the exact same amount. Fair enough that they didn't think they needed to draft anyone, but seems like they should have been able to get more for it all
This is pretty okay for a second round pick. We got the rights to Amando Moreno in that draft day trade. https://www.transfermarkt.com/amando-moreno/profil/spieler/253573
Only 20 minutes until the Chicago Fire are "on the board" with its first pick in the 2019 MLS "Super" (duper) Draft- Pick 5, Round 3, Pick No. 53 overall. We have had success in the third round before. 2018- Elliot Collier, the 'great' (I guess he is better than RSL-twice, Montreal and NYCFC, all which picked "PASS" in the 2018 3rd round). 2017- the 'creative' Brandt Bronico 2016- Vincent Keller (and who can forget Vincent Keller) 2015- no pick (traded with Jalil Anibaba) 2014-no pick 2013-no third round (Supplemental Draft a few days later, Fire had no pick until No. 30) 2012-no third round (Supplement Draft, Fire selected John Gallagher with its "first" pick) 2011-Jason Herrick and Davis Paul 2010-Steven Kinney 2009-David Sias 2008-Dwight Barret and Stephen King 2007- Mike Banner 2006- Jordan Russolillo 2005- Chris Rolfe (note, in 2005, he was the 29th pick, so now he would barely be out of the first round) Gonzalo Segares Thabiso Khumalo In a word: Crapshoot!
My thinking on the draft has changed quite a bit and I wouldn't be surprised to see it changed quite significantly in the next few years, and maybe being phased out. Winners: MLS clubs (for realizing that college players are no longer good enough for the league) USL (for the load of players that will be available to them) Squad caliber college soccer players (because they will land at the more appropriate USL Championship and League 1 levels and get more playing time) Losers: No one, really. This is a good development and it appears that the league is fast approaching MLS 3.0. No one asks me, but I think MLS 3.0 looks like: A 32 team league split between east and west. 30 league games (home and away in your conference), US Open Cup, MLS/Liga MX Cup, MLS Cup. No more mid-season friendlies. MLS "Draft"/Generation Adidas consisting on 1 round of the 32 best college players in the country USL Championship and USL League 1 becoming more professional and imitating the top MLS structure.
