Out of all these minnows, I want to see Philippines in the 2019 Asian Cup. They surprised us all by beating North Korea on the final match round. Plus their general campaign was impressive considering their history and player material. Same can be said about Kyrgyzstan, with only 2 losses in a group of Australia and Jordan.

There are 11 teams in the play off round. How is that going to work?

    Good question .

This post from AFC been discussed : "At the bottom of the table, Chinese Taipei have finished their campaign with no points and will be one of 16 teams heading for the qualifying playoffs."

    http://www.the-afc.com/asian-cup-20...sia-2018uae-2019-qualifiers-md10-a-look-ahead

Could be that 5 teams that were knocked out in First round will join the 11 teams ?

The draw of the groups will be held after october 2016, so maybe in december 2016. So the fifa rankings of april is not useful but it can give some indications:

Pot 1: Jordan, Oman, Kyrgyzstan, North Korea, Philippines, Kuwait (or Turkmenistan)

Pot 2: Turkmenistan (or Palestine), Bahrain, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Singapore

Pot 3: Myanmar, Tajikistan, Guam, Lebanon

    + 8 teams of : india / laos / bangladesh / bhutan/timor leste / yemen / cambodia / pakistan / mongolia / sri lanka etc

There are 6 teams eliminated in the 1st round so if they were added we would have an extra team. I'm guessing that since there are two rounds of the play offs the bottom 2 raked nations will play to even it out to 16.

Yes, but Pakistan is not active now, and may not want to play in the playoffs ?

Anyway draw is soon so AFC must inform about the playoffs within a week.

Each team will be drawn against an opponent from the second pot. They will then battle it out in a two legged play-off, home and away, to ensure five of the winning teams will qualify automatically for the Asian Cup.
The five losing teams will them play in a second play-off round, this time featuring Bhutan to make it an affair of six teams, with the three winners gaining qualification.

No entry for teams from First round.

Yes and they made a slight mistake here. As Laos is going to be awarded 3-0 win from the postponed match against Kuwait, India will be replaced by Laos in pot 1.

FIFA has not made any final decision about Kuwait's two remaining matches. They have not awarded Laos a 3-0 win.

Well, which do we believe, Goal.com or AFC as the AFC has mentioned there being 16 teams in the play-offs. There's obviously no other way to get 16 teams than to get teams from the first round. As poor as the AFC is in releasing info, I'm still inclined to believe the little info that they do release. We'll just have to wait and see though.

The goal.com description is backed up by the Maldives FA as well. BTW I would expect the change to see Laos seeded rather than India. It also does make sense in an AFC sort of way - remember the qualification scheme for the 2010 World Cup that saw the 11 best 1st round winners advance straight to the group stage, but the remaining 8 winners having to go through another play-off - these guys like to mix it up.

The goal.com schema also involves 16 matches (which might be the cause of the confusion).

Website of Tajikistan Football Federation also outlines the same process as Maldives has said. I believe AFC has shared the format with the MAs.

Well, there you go then. As I've said, the AFC are poor in releasing info. Now, the little info they do release, they f**k up! lol.

    Not good enough :)

FIFA has not made any final decision about Kuwait's matches.

    http://www.fifa.com/worldcup/preliminaries/asia/index.html#275171

FIFA has informed the AFC, Kuwait Football Association, Laos Football Association and Korea Republic Football Association that, taking into account the suspension of the Kuwait FA, the Kuwait-Laos and Korea Republic-Kuwait 2018 FIFA World Cup™ qualifying matches, scheduled for 24 and 29 March 2016 respectively, cannot take place as things stand at the time of writing.
They were also informed that these matters are to be referred to the FIFA Disciplinary Committee for its consideration. Further information will follow in due time.
