    The Philippines are not (or should not be) stupid. They know trying to take the game to us is not advisable. Us sitting back won't persuade them to leave spaces at the back, it will just lead to a stand-off. You really think that breaking down defensive sides is as simple as sitting deep and giving them the ball?

    Against an inferior, defensive side we don't have another option.

    get them more comfortable with possession then exploit them with counter attacks as their line creeps up. if they remain playing deep, we'd have big pockets in midfield to drive at their back line and pressure their defenders on the ball.
