El Paso had a solid owner and team back in the 90's. They were the El Paso Patriots. A la Patriot missle defense system. From Gulf War I fame. I used to watch them on Fox SW in college years as they were the pro team, theUSL club, from Texas. Sure wasn't gonna root for the Dallas Burn! Great to see El Paso make a return to play.

Is there anyone at RGV people think is first team ready? What do you think of: Enriquez Quintanilla Wharton Small Padilla Ontiveros Perea
Guess as good as any place for a first post. I watch all the RGVFC games. Of the ones you listed Enriquez and Small are probably the two best. Padilla is worth a flier because he's a right-back and that's a position of need. Todd Wharton almost certainly is on this team next year, but I'm not confident he'll succeed. Detail below: Jesus Enriquez - Forward/Attacking Midfielder 21 years old, 6 goals and 6 assists. Played the Quioto role for RGVFC. Dual U.S. Mexican national, Xolos youth system. Worthwhile to take a flier on in my opinion. Can probably be had for cheap, no international slot and can push Memo and Pena for minutes. Aldo Quintanilla - Forward, 23 years old, 5 goals and 4 assists. Played the center forward role until Carlos Small was selected. Mexican national, Santos Laguna/Queretaro youth systems. Afterwards featured in the front-line alongside Carlos Small and became more of a facilitator. I don't think he's good enough to burn an international slot on. Todd Wharton - Midfielder, 24 years old. 4 goals, 5 assists, led team in key passes. Captained the Toros in 2018. UVA alum. Central mid in a dual pivot systems mainly playing alongside Perea. This guy is the latest in the line of central mid cogs that the Toros seem to specialize in. Think Charlie Ward and Eric Bird. He's more athletic than Ward and better at moving the ball than Bird was, but as with the former I don't know that he has a high ceiling in MLS. All prior Toros captains (Garcia, Ward, Bird) have received Dynamo contracts. I expect he will as well, although I'm skeptical if he does better than Ward/Bird, who both struggled in MLS. Carlos Small - Forward, 23 years old. 5 goals, 1 assist. Panama international who sees call-ups with the national team. Took over for Quintanilla as the main CF and did a pretty good job of it. Big/strong center forward type with good hold-up play. Not as fast as Elis/Quioto. He's probably one of the better guys on the roster honestly. Sans international slot I'd take him and use him to push Pena/Manotas, but I don't know if they can/should burn another international slot on a forward. Manny Padilla - Defender, 22 years old. 89th overall draft pick in 2018. He beat out long-term Toros right-back Kai Greene. Not spectacular, but he can defend. All the interviews with him suggest he plays with a giant chip on his shoulder if you like the mental aspect. Dynamo are desperate for right-backs so something is wrong if he isn't getting a look. Omar Ontiveros - Defender, 23 years old. Remember when the reports that Jordan and Cabrera were in Luxembourg on a scouting trip? Ontiveros is the guy they were there to see. He played two season with CS Grevenmacher. Born in South Texas, Santos Laguna youth system, ended up in Luxembourg. Go figure. Anyhow, played 23 games on the backline mainly alongside ex-Dynamo centerback Conor Donovan. Also had a few spot starts at right-back. Decent, personally think Donovan was the better of the two of them and he got cut so take away from that what you will. Nicolas Perea - Midfielder, 26 years old. 3 goals 0 assists. Other side of the dual pivot with Wharton. More of a destroyer than Wharton was, but he's older and I'm not entirely clear on his status, but may take an international spot. Pass. Bonus round: Kyle Adams - Defender, 22 years old. New Zealand national. Probably the best defender at RGVFC, but takes an international slot. Played CB and left-back. Doubt we spend an international slot on him and that's probably the right decision. Pablo Aguilar - Midfielder, 23 years old, dual Guatemalan/U.S. citizenship. 2 goals, 1 assist. Got his debut for the Guatemalan national team against Israel (they were shellacked 0-7). This is another UVA guy who was an attacking midfielder, but ended up playing a more withdrawn role on the roster. Did not have a great year with the Toros, but earned his first international call-up and the Toros coaching staff purportedly love him. Sheldon Sullivan - Leftback, 23 years old. Yet another UVA grad, 66th overall pick in the 2018 Draft. Similar to Padilla he isn't spectacular, but he can defend and we're so thin at left-back that he should be one the radar. Who is the Dynamo connection at UVA? We sign way too many of their players for it to be a coincidence.
I used to watch RGV a couple years back, but haven’t followed much the last year. Appreciate the analysis.
I follow them as well and I really appreciate the terrific detailed break down on these players of our system!
