He's advocating for open trials for the national team in advance of 2022. Nothing in his statement is past tense, so I firmly disagree with your reading of it.
The trials for good national teams are domestic leagues. Maybe Barbados would have open trials, but even when we don't qualify we're much better than almost all of the Caribbean.
Well, the Chivas USA model worked so well, so why not try it on the National Team level? You remember, just grab any Latino kid who was overlooked by "the man" and only by giving him a chance, you'll see that he is much better than those guys named Chad and Blake who look like they should be hanging out at the yacht club who are already populating MLS rosters...
LAPOINTE: We have 4 years to put together the best USMNT. One State and region tryout at a time, along with the most intense recruiting program. We can find the best talent we have. What ********ing resume? “I made my team drive from Springfield, Mass. to Rockford, Ill. for a championship game, saving several hundred dollars.”
Harrumph! Get off my lawn! Wait, shouldn't that be "You lot better get out of my garden! I'm trying to have tea and biscuits in peace!"?

That was what I thought, too, when I read that. He sounds like a teenager complaining about the pretty girl that wouldn't go to the prom with him at this point.
The entire USSF topic is so toxic because people don't bother to look stuff up, don't accept what USSF says, believe in conspiracy, or just want it their way. I understand being skeptical of USSF with certain topics, but they aren't the Stasi. For example, USSF recently stopped some pilot programs for youth development (7 and under). There are people who then start blaming Sunil and MLS because apparently MLS doesn't want competition and Sunil only cares about "his money". In reality, the program existed because Sunil pushed for funding these small pilot programs and made sure the programs were given a chance ... it was cancelled once he was "relieved of duties". Meanwhile, MLS has provided a small amount of money (10s of thousands) to these programs (7 and under). This information isn't really hidden. Soccer America does good reporting and did so on this. If people really cared to the extent they complain, they would pay the 40 bucks a year it costs to get unlimited access where this information is. Or at least read the 3-5 articles a month you get for free. The Athletic does really good work. They have expanded to almost 20 cities and have experienced and very good beat/columnists who have served those cities. plus, they now have a soccer section. it cost about 50 bucks a year, but with their recent expansion, they have given significant discounts plus free trials. The other day, someone in another forum asked for a summary of an article from the Athletic as they "refuse to pay for this service". Instead, we get some idiot who doesn't bother reading/finding out the exact info, then writing something up, and then tweeting it, which then gets re-tweeted, which then gets re-tweeted by someone with more following, and in the end, more people get exposed to a blatant fabrication. As an aside, I don't mean to trivialize spending 40-50 dollars/year as not a big deal. It's just that if you are so passionate about something, don't you want the actual information with people who are actually journalists or at the very least have standards. I also highly recommend the Athletic. They have some great writers who are able write interesting and good articles without having to worry about how many clicks the article gets. It's nice not to have hot takes put in just to sell a story. Plus, they seem to have built/are building a solid soccer writer base with 12 MLS teams, US National Teams, and reportedly Detroit City FC.
The requirement to offer hot takes you don't actually believe in have completely ruined sports journalism. Also, NBA on TNT has ruined game analysis.

So he's suggesting there's a conspiracy to prevent such a run, again? Honestly....is there something wrong with him?
Yes, he's a delusional narcissistic asshole. Everything is a conspiracy against him because nothing could possibly be his fault, right? I'm also curious as to what he would say if NTX, Miami, or Golden State win next week. Probably nothing, because it goes against his narrative.
Eric Wynalda is acting like a jilted lover. He lost, and he can't handle it, and he's just bitter now. Cheer up, Eric. It's not like the USSF slept with John Harkes.
