"2018 SCHEDULE RELEASE SHOW: Watch live Thursday at 10:30 a.m." (SJEarthquakes.com - Wednesday, 1/3/18) GO SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Ready for Heineken Rivalry Week? From August 22-26, you’ll get national broadcasts of ... NYCFC vs. New York Red Bulls (Aug. 22; 7 p.m. ET | FS1) Houston Dynamo vs. FC Dallas (Aug. 23; 9 p.m. ET | UniMás) Orlando City SC vs. Atlanta United FC (Aug. 24 | 8 p.m. ET | ESPN) LA Galaxy vs. LAFC (Aug. 24; 10:30 p.m. ET | ESPN) Toronto FC vs. Montreal Impact (Aug. 25; 8 p.m. ET | TSN, TVAS) New York Red Bulls vs. D.C. United (Aug. 26; 7 p.m. ET | FS1) Portland Timbers vs. Seattle Sounders FC (Aug. 26; 9:30 p.m. ET | FS1) Notice how quickly the league removed San Jose from our rivalry week matchup with the filth? Not that they're trying to manufacture a rivalry between the two LA teams.
Hmmmmmm. Guess I'm going to have make more of an effort to see my Quakes this season. One game each in Portlandia and shittle. It will be cold, and possibly nasty for that 28Oct18 game in shittle. I'll just have to drink a lot to stay warm. I might be able to make the game in Colorado. That would be fun. Maybe I can squeeze in both 15Sep18 and 19Sep18 at home, versus the Sporks and Aholeanta. (Still working a suitably derogatory name for FCA.) Hmmmmmmm. Go Quakes!! F el-lay, twice!! - Mark
I guess it's going to be like pairing off at the dance. The Quakes and some team like Minnesota will be left w/o a "rival" that MLS wants to push while they pair up Seattle-Portland, LAG-LAFC, etc. So we'll get the Minnesota - Quakes ("well we had 2 teams left over") "rivalry game".
It is Vancouver, actually. SJ and Vancouver play each other three times, twice in Vancouver. https://www.sjearthquakes.com/schedule
OK, so Vancouver stands there at the dance and watches natural partner Seattle get paired off with Portland, looks across the room and sees a forlorn looking Quakes, having just watched their natural rival LAG get paired off with LAFC. "Well, I guess it'll have to be the Quakes..."
I'd rather have our real rivalry not on the contrived rivalry week anyway... it'll get more focus standing on its own. Watch, there will be banner ads about the California Classico for the June 30 game. 4 Wednesday games sucks... 7:30PM on a Wednesday in the heart of Silicon Valley commute traffic. Non Saturday games: 2018 4 Wed, 1 Sun (5 total) 2017 2 Wed, 1 Fri, 1 Sun (4 total) 2016 3 Wed, 3 Fri, 4 Sun (10 total) 2015 4 Fri, 6 Sun (10 total) 2014 3 Wed, 1 Fri, 4 Sun (8 total) 2013 2 Wed, 6 Sun (8 total) 2012 3 Wed, 4 Sun (7 total) 2011 1 Wed, 0 Sun (1 total) 2010 4 Wed, 0 Sun (4 total) 2009 1 Wed, 1 Sun (2 total) 2008 0 Wed, 2 Sun (2 total)
I once went dancing with my wife. There were three or four young gals there, who the men at the dance avoided like the plague. My wife felt bad for them and told I should go dance with them. It was tough, but I managed. Maybe our game with Wankouver will turn out to be a barn burner, or we'll slag them seriously. Go Quakes!! F! el-lay twice!! - Mark
Only 5 Quakes games on national television, 4 of them in Spanish. Whoop-de-doo I wonder how many LAughing F*C* games Graber allotted to national TV, less than 5? Doubtful.
No, just some ballroom dancing. When my wife wants to take a breather, I have to keep dancing because one of my knees sucks and freeze up if I rest. So I danced (only danced) with the young gals, who were all cute by the by. - M
Overall I see 5 Wednesday games causing short rest. All but 1 of them, the first of the season, has us avoiding travel for the midweek. Overall our schedule has us slightly back loaded on home games. So, mildly annoying things on the schedule, but nothing too terrible.
We werent all that great, and we arent all that marketing friendly either. Most of the breakdown for nationally televised games can be explained by those 2 factors.
I agree -- it's hard to fault MLS for treating us badly. Apart from the people who post here and another 17 fans, the SJ/SF/Oak metro area largely doesn't care. Besides, we all remember the intense rivalry between Chivas and the Gals and can fully understand why MLS wants to recreate that.
MLS gives the Quakes a rivalry home game on the same weekend every year to help sell out a 50,000 seat stadium. That's a bigger deal than getting squeezed into some sponsor-branded "rivalry week".

Teams from the same city naturally have a rivalry. It doesn't need to be manufactured. If Sacto ever comes into the league they will become a rival just by proximity.
Bummer. I was hoping to time our annual visit to NYC to watch the Quakes and NYFC. May try to go the August game in Denver against the Rapids.
