Conclusion #1: most BS posters know more than these guys. #2: Mike Burns has made a lot of enemies. Too bad we didn’t see something like this when Doyle was around.
Soccer America: Projecting the 23 MLS opening-day lineups San Jose (Saturday, vs. Minnesota United). New head coach Mikael Stahre has plenty of options for his front six, having started Fatai Alashe, Magnus Erikssonand Jahmir Hyka and given Tommy Thompson lots of playing time in recent games. Projected opening-day lineup (USA-eligible players: 4): Tarbell; Lima, *Quintana, Cummings, Salinas; Vako, Godoy, Jungwirth, *Eriksson, Hoesen, Wondolowski. *New players.
I'm ecstatic that we aren't on anybody's radar screen. Seems to me that the same was true in 2001 and 2012...
Marie is not signed yet and it seems like it’s come down to his “domestic status”. Marie was supposedly born to 2 American parents in France. For some reason, the Quakes felt that he would qualify as a domestic player (perhaps MLS gave them incorrect info).
From a quick check on the State Department website: A person born abroad in wedlock to a U.S. citizen mother and a U.S. citizen father acquires U.S. citizenship at birth under section 301(c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), if one of the parents has had a residence in the United States or one of its outlying possessions prior to the person’s birth. [emphasis mine] Maybe his parents had been in France for so long they had not had "a residence in the US..." https://travel.state.gov/content/tr...isition-US-Citizenship-Child-Born-Abroad.html
From the Thiaw/Musovski signing article: "Discussions with MLS regarding first-round pick Paul Marie’s eligibility as a domestic player are ongoing." So something peak MLS is going on.
SI 2018 MLS Season Predictions Three out of four predict the Quakes missing the playoffs. We are in! One of four predicted Wondo being one of the scoring leaders.
Armchair Analyst: One big question for each of MLS's 23 teams San Jose Earthquakes Can the defense defend? I'm bullish on their attack. I think this team's going to score a bunch of goals even though they're not going to have a traditional playmaker in the starting lineup (I think Jackson Yueill can be that guy, but maybe not until next year). I am less certain about their backline and goalkeeper. It's very much an open question in San Jose.
Doyle poaching my posts again. Actually if he'd poach them more diligently he'd be wrong less often , like when he put Qwiberg as Quakes opening day starter at left back.
You aren't the only one that's been trumpeting the butt horn... at least on the defense front. After watching preseason, I think he may be right on goals, though I'm not sold on Yueill yet (I think Godoy and Flo are far better/complete players and one year isn't going the change that... I'd rather have TT there as the third string frankly).
Yeah, as I said, I'm not worried about the offense, and Vako is a big reason for that (with Hoesen another lesser one and Magnus another lesser one after that, and Wondo just being a constant). I hope there's a role for TT in there somewhere, even if as a regular sub. Magnus will probably be sitting on a yellow most of the time if he isn't actually suspended from yellow accumulation or a red, so maybe TT comes in at 70' or so for Magnus and gets occasional starts.
I thought the One Big Question is: What is the Quakes' Style of Play? Or is it: Who's falvo's Birdy? (or, in other words, What Does Mrs. Yallop Think?)
Quintana makes me more nervous than Cummings by far. He’s fairly young and has to adjust to a new league. So there will be growing pains but I don’t think it means necessarily we can’t score enough to overcome that.
We were God awful TERRIBLE at set pieces last year. That is supposed to be his specialty. If he scores some goals and shuts down the big guys on corner kicks he will be valuable.
