We will face 4 seed D.C., 5 seed Columbus, or 6 seed Philadelphia. If Philadelphia wins at 3 seed NYCFC, we face Philadelphia. If NYCFC wins, we face D.C. or Columbus. We cannot play NYCFC unless we advance and they beat Atlanta. We qualify for the Concacaf Champions League if any of the top three clubs win MLS Cup because Atlanta and Sporting Kansas City already qualified. Us and Atlanta will host MLS Cup if we make it. Sporting Kansas City will host MLS Cup if they make it and the East is won by the 3 seed or worse. If MLS Cup has us or Atlanta host Sporting Kansas City, we qualify for the Concacaf Champions League.
I'm disappointed that https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/mls/ thinks we're the third best club. They have Atlanta as the best and most likely to win MLS Cup. They have Sporting Kansas City as second best and third most likely to win MLS Cup, with those two switched with us. It's possible that they would have Sporting Kansas City as more likely than us to win MLS Cup if it was at a neutral site. We had 9 more points than Sporting Kansas City. Goal differential was closer, but ours was 4 better. The East won more games against the West than vice-versa, and the two clubs we played three times were both good, so, I would expect us to have played a more difficult schedule, and certainly not a schedule that was 9 points easier than Sporting Kansas City's. We were the only club that played two games at D.C.
MLS had four people make brackets. Here are the four predictions for us: 1. Beat D.C., beat Atlanta, and lose to Seattle 2. Beat Philadelphia, beat D.C., and lose to Seattle 3. Beat D.C., beat NYCFC, and beat Sporting Kansas City 4. Beat D.C., beat Atlanta, and beat Portland All four brackets had us and Seattle reaching the Conference Finals. All four brackets had Columbus and FC Dallas losing in the Knockout Round.

So we get the Crew after they beat DC in penalties. Drew 1-1 away with them in early June and lost at home 3-2 in July. But since that loss, RBNY only lost once more the entire season, going 9-1-3 to end season. Hopefully the Crew will have some tired legs after 120 mins last night. They host Sunday at 3 pm. Return leg on 11/11, time TBD.
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more; Or close the wall up with our current squad dead. In the regular season there's nothing so becomes a man As modest stillness and humility: But when the blast of playoffs blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger; Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood, Disguise fair nature with hard-favored rage; Then lend the eye a terrible aspect; Let pry through the portage of the head Like the brass cannon; let the brow overwhelm it As fearfully as doth a galled rock Overhang and jutty his confounded base, Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean. Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide, Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit To his full height. On, on, you noblest RBNY. Whose blood is fat from previous campaigns of war-proof! Campaigns that, like so many of the Metrostars', Have in these parts from morn till even fought And sheathed their swords for lack of argument: Dishonor not your fans; now attest That those whom you call'd supporters did beget you. Be copy now to men of grosser blood, And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman, Whose limbs were made in Harrison, show us here The mettle of your pasture; let us swear That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not; For there is none of you so mean and base, That hath not noble luster in your eyes. I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips, Straining upon the start. The game's afoot: Follow your spirit, and upon this charge Cry 'God for the fans, Red Bull, and NY/NJ!'
2 great saves on each end during injury time, yikes! 0-1 on the first leg away isn't a complete disaster. But it's surely not very good. Not what many of us would've expected. No away goal may make it so we have to win by 2 goals back home. As good and consistent as we can be during regular seasons, we just don't seem to know how to translate that to playoff matches.
you heard it here first......Red Bulls bomb out of the playoffs by winning the 2nd leg 2-1. They always find a way to fall short. I hope I'm wrong.
2-1 would mean PKs right? Have Adams, man mark Higuain would bee a good move. I really dread the playoffs, just feels like we can never have it together in the clutch atmosphere. Not sure when we will.
no, it would mean NYRB get elimated on away goals despite winning the match. The aggregate score would be 2-2 but Crew would've scored an away goal. The only way there would be PK's is if NYRB won the 2nd leg 1-0. basically any tie goes to Columbus, and if both teams score, New York needs to win by at least two goals
Same old Metro. Day late and a dollar short to what’s happening on the field in real time during a big game. Defense played well. Great Columbus goal. Oh well. Offense had no clue what to do. Completely forgot who they were and failed to recognize what Columbus was conceeding. At home expect to see more BS short corner nonsense, more Murillo crosses into row Z, more indecisiveness from Etienne, more of Muyl refusing to do the one thing he does well (drive to the end line), Ivan and Royer won’t do jack...again.... So Columbus will sit on Kaku and BWP won’t get any service and we’re out of the playoffs...again.
Wow that's some really good pessimism right there. I guess you ruled us out of the supporters shield huh?
Yes there is our history of course. But I'm still supportin! And hoping to do that in person back at RBA this Sunday.
Why didnt we press them early? I would like to see Adams used to man mark Higuain? I just don't get how we always end up in this situation. Always having to fight back and falling short.
I hope it happens. I hope this weekend is that turnaround game like Boston had against the Yankees to break the curse. But I just don't see it. This team has collapsed in MLS Cups and Open Cups so often, you just hope for the best but prepare for the worst.
It's been pretty quiet all week, but I'd like to read something about the Red Bulls understanding that they are in the same old pickle once again, and that there is any sense of urgency, or commitment to trying to win this game. That much at least would be refreshing.
I'm sure they know that. We were lame at Columbus. If we can't get the job done at home, I don't know what to say. But as a fan I'm all in. Just about to buy my ticket online in fact, if I can't get one from a friend.
I just saw the below. I already knew it, but seeing it graphically is a little disheartening... much more heavily weighted towards yellow than red. BUT... there's always the 12th man phenomenon! I just got an excellent ticket for $35... I welcome all of you who are proximate to do the same. Let's do this!
I was a fan and STH year one, and again a STH for the past several seasons, since before moving to the Arena. In all those years, I have rarely seen this club play with the kind of urgency and determination that it takes to win championships. There always seems to be a hangup of some kind, a point at which the team falls flat. I'd grant that a letdown, after winning the Shield is to be expected. But that is also one reason why I had argued against pushing to win it in the first place. The only relevance is the form of this team over a run of several games. Going cold just as the playoffs start, against a team that had played 120 minutes half a week earlier smacks of the same kind of Metro-fail as has haunted this club since the beginning. The difference between Cup and Shield is that every game is a big game, no let-downs allowed. So yeah, I'll be there to cheer this team on, try to lift them to a win, but they better come out and play like they want it more than Columbus, because nothing less is going to get the job done.
So I turn 40 today, Saturday. I was gonna do drinks with close the friends but my wife felt left out so she planned a big dinner for 730pm, kickoff time for RBNY game and we are doing a hotel tonight and picking up the kid in the morning about KO of the Man U game. Thank God for video replay of games and it being 2018.
