It was nice to be top of the league for a few hours before Houston hung a surprise curb stomping of Atlanta.
BBVA Compass Stadium holds 22k. Attendance yesterday was listed as 20k. I think that those 2k empty seats must have been in these sections only...
The Gals sign some guy from Sweden. SI: Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a 2-year, $3 million deal with LA Galaxy on a TAM contract. Could be in the Galaxy squad for its March 31 rivalry game vs LAFC on big FOX https://t.co/BiTijMQ6jf— Subscribe to GrantWahl.com (@GrantWahl) March 22, 2018 Honestly, how is Zlatan on only $1.5 million a year? EDIT: Poor Ola.
That kind of thing happens a lot to German players who leave the club they started with or became prominent with to sign with Bayern... Nothing new here. But they always think that they will be the one to break through--like a lot of the "one and done's" in basketball. Mind you, due to schedule conflicts and the increased workload that the CL and cup brings, they often get to play some... And they do win championships...
Based on this tired ass rumor that's finally true, I'd imagine LA have had those rights for a few years now.
He can't be a DP because LA doesn't have any spots. I'm utterly SHOCKED that Garber didn't create a new rule.
New York, NY For Immediate Release Today, Dong Arble announced the addition of a new special Designated Player roster spot in MLS. This new DP spot can be utilized by any team that currently has all DP spots filled, and reside in California and whose name rhymes with "waxy" can temporarily "borrow" any unused DP slot from any team facing threat of relocation to another city, whether the borrowee agrees or not for the duration of the lame duck seasons until said team is successfully relocated. This new DP spot, called the "ATX DP spot" will not be able to be filled by that loser ********ing club until it is returned to them after successful relocation. Dong Arble stated his belief that this new rule will really benefit MLS and increase its long term viability and is totally above board and fair to all teams. Also, suck it Columbus SCrew.
He either doesn't care about the money (he can probably afford to live in LA for a season or two off his prior earnings) or MLS has some other way of compensating him. I believe he's probably on 1.5 mil specifically because (correct me if I'm wrong)...that's the max salary for a TAM player.....and as was mentioned they don't have available DP spots. Definitely overshadows Ola....but I'm inclined to think this means they'll play with 2 strikers. Ola on his Columbus wage already made too much to be left out of the starting 11. I'm guessing hes making even more with Gals.
Wasn't Beckham deal like max salary but he got a greater cut of his jersey sales? I could see something like that with Zlatan.
Just another superstar, steered to one of the favored clubs. A truly competitive league would rise up in protest. I think, if the Crew are relocated, I might spend a little time here, stirring the pot on other teams' pages, when this (continues) to happen.
What I mean is, there is no other "single entity" league. there's not a central office deciding which team gets which player. The other owners don't seem to complain that these world stars keep ending up in just a few major cities, I guess because they keep thinking that these players will "raise awareness" of the league, resulting in PROFIT, despite the history of Beckham, for example. More and more, I agree with whoever on this thread said "it's a rich guy's club that pretends to run a soccer league, but the rules just keep them from having to spend enough to be a real soccer league".
League: "Zlatan, do you like Columbus and Austin?" Z: "I have to play for two teams? How does..." League: "No no no. It's like this. So the owner... oh, nevermind. Do you like those two places or not?" Z: "Where do they play?" League: "One plays in the first soccer-specific stadium in the United States. The other is looking at playing on site nobody else wants because it used to be a major hazardous waste dump." Z: "... So can I just play at the soccer-specific one?" League: "Sorry, mon ami. It's both or neither." Z: "What about Los Angeles?" League: "Which one?" Z: "Which one?" League: "There are two LA teams." Z: "Would I have to play for both of them too?" League: "Ohoho, mon ami, you kill me. No, you could just play for one. Let me call up the Galaxy and see if we can screw over the Crew's former striker there since he got out of Columbus before we could screw him there."
I know Zlatan had arrived in MLS. But he just f'ing arrived in a huge way. LAFC were winning 3-0. Galaxy come back to win 4-3. Zlatan comes on in the 71 min. Scores a ridiculous volley from way the f*** out with the keeper off his line in the 77'. Then bangs in a header to win the game in as stoppage time, 91'. Fun stuff.
The winning header was clearly offside. But of course we won't be letting anything as trivial as the Laws of the Game get in they way of a headline-grabbing Hollywood story.
No. It wasn't. If he was off, it was only a matter of inches. It was close enough that it was in that "benefit of the doubt to the attacker" range, and certainly close enough that it wasn't "clear and obvious" for VAR.
