Also, that Tuesday game is technically week 25. PRO probably posted the assignment today so they wouldn't be posting it the day of.
USOC Semi and a CONCACAF League match for Vazquez. Pretty solid for a guy who's done 8 MLS matches. On his way to a white badge?
Tough to say. It's definitely notable that both ARs in Philly are relatively local (although obviously a veteran in Lowry's case) compared to the ARs in Houston.
You got it right in the MLS thread. "A player is offside if he clearly attempts to play a ball which is close to him when this action impacts on an opponent." Attempts to play the ball? Check Ball was close to him? Check Impacted an opponent? Nope
I was one of the confused ones. It had been a while since I had read the updated rule. The old Law, back in the days when I was carrying a flag, wasn't as specific. The current law distinguishes between playing the ball and ATTEMPTING to play the ball. Interfering with play requires actually TOUCHING it, and ATTEMPTING to play it only matters if you interfere with an opponent. This is a lot easier than I first thought. Goal counts.
I have a technical question about the handling in the penalty area that lead to 3rd goal for Philly in their match against New England on Saturday. Clear handling in the area to take away an open header on goal for the Union. Does this count as DOGSO? In my opinion it does not, but I'm curious to know the opinion of others. Also, with the new DOGSO rules, would this be a RC if it was DOGSO, or a YC? My understanding is that DOGSO in the area is now a YC, but I sort of remember something about it still being a RC if it is a handling offense (e.g., Luis Suarez in the 2010 WC semifinal). Highlight here: https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/m...on-vs-philadelphia-union/details/video/167140 Thanks!
It's not DOGSO. The player still needed to get the header on goal and the goalkeeper was in a good position to make a save. But it was certainly a yellow. It can't be compared with the Suarez incident when he stopped a clear goal. Also DOGSO in the penalty area didn't change when it comes to handling. It's still a red card offense.
Does DC United vs. Orlando City go down in MLS history as the most uses of VAR in a single game? 4 potential goals were reviewed for offside along with a violent conduct review.
No, there were 5. Rooney scored one that was ruled offside on the field (and confirmed to be offside, correctly, due to Asad being offside on the buildup). Acosta's 2nd and 3rd were both reviewed. Dwyer's was reviewed. And the red card.
We're they checked (like every goal is) or were they reviewed (where the referee physically went over to the TV monitory)?
How does Jurisevic not let Ted Unkel know he may have made a mistake on the Reto Ziegler red card? I think he contributed to the way this match ended.
Man, the announcers were just reaming the hell out of Unkel for the way he screwed the pooch on the ending of Dallas @ Seattle. Why was VAR not an option there?
The video is out there that shows what Ziegler did. The real question is how a VAR has, yet again, not recommended a review for VC on a clear headbutt. Ziegler reacted for a reason.
So it sounds like they correctly caught Ziegler for the retaliation but missed the headbutt from Ruidiaz. Of course it's common for the on field officials to catch the retaliation but not the first aggressor. But VAR is supposed to catch it. And even only seeing one angle at 240p, you can see how clearly he headbutts his opponent.
There's a huge outcry from Orlando fans about the winner DC goal last night... mostly based around the non-understanding of APP. Right around the 9s mark here, watch what Acosta does at the top of the penalty area... Now, this was not seen by the ref, but I have a suspicion that this was what the VAR video was looking at. Although, this incident came before the APP (which actually began when Rooney won the ball near the halfway line), I suspect that it was being looked at for potential VC.
Was there really a need to have a full VAR review on the disallowed Rooney goal? It was clearly offside so shouldn't have been more than a glance surely? Also saw Rooney asking for VAR which is supposed to be yellow, especially when it was clearly a correct call.
I saw that and surely at that moment the right call if seen is to play advantage anyway, so would a referee be allowed to say that I would have played an advantage if I saw it and the goal would stand?
Acosta's trip was NOT what was reviewed on this goal; the review was checking whether he was offside or not, as Wienckowski had flagged him as offside.
