I know they spoke to two power 5 female assistants as well, that were not alums. Looks like they had a plan and went with it. One of he others they passed on is very sharp on and off the field, but an alum is hard to pass on if they have similar resumes.
Chris Neal official at UNC Wilmington. In his four seasons in the CAA at Elon, which is fully funded (Wilmington is not), he finished: 2014: 10th (last) 2015: 10th (last) 2016: 10th (last) 2017: 7th (missed CAA tournament)
Mertz at Oregon met with her administrator apparently yesterday and when discussing goals for the fall administration clearly said “we have to be in postseason and competing for a championship.” Oregon HOT
I’ve heard it’s Sarah Stanczyk. I’ll let everyone google instead of ruining the surprise. Also heard it’d be announced last Sunday.
Do not know her, but honestly compared to some of the other hires this year I don't think it is that bad. Timing is tough, but being a Michigan native should help her. People knock female hires all the time on this thread, but who on this list has had more success/experience in division 1 than her in the last 6 years? Don't see anyone with Big East of Big 10 success. Sarah Stanczyk Played 2 years at UConn & 2 at Michigan 2 Years volunteer coach at Michigan 34-9-4 NCAA tournament 4 Years assistant coach at Depaul 45-18-16 NCAA tournament UMBC - Vanessa Mann (William and Mary Assistant Coach) Incarnate Word - Emma Wright-Cates (Owner of Pass & Move LLC) Towson - Katherine Vettori (Director Vettori Soccer Academy) Austin Peay - Naomi Kolarova (Tennessee Wesleyan Head Coach) Miami (OH) - Courtney Sirmans (Rice Assistant Coach) Portland - Michelle French (USWNT Assistant Coach) William & Mary - Julie Shackford (FC Virginia DA Director) George Washington - Michelle Demko (Asheville Head coach) Northwestern State - Anna Jobe (Dallas Baptist Assistant Coaches) Asheville - Lindsay Vera (UTGV assistant coach) I excluded UCONN and High Point as assistants were promoted.
Does anyone know if it’s true that Hampton University really will put interim coach Chris Reoyos (no D1 experience) current assistant in charge of first year in the big south?
Your point is made but that listing is a bit misleading for at least 2 coaches. Shackford was the HC at Princeton and Vettori was at Loyola. Others on that list could have HC experience as well. Neal at UNCW could be argued just got very, very lucky OR you could say it's going to be very tough for him. The previous HC is suing the school to keep his job (or be compensated you assume) and the previous AC apparently bugged out as well. He likely knows Cairney and so tough situation.
Elon is a place where female high school students are already lining up to attend, with or without soccer. Elon should have been a winner, it’s an easy sell for female players. Poor talent evaluation along with minimal effort was the outcome over the years at Elon. The conference is a perfect for women’s soccer at Elon and the results should have been there. I don't think it will be tough for him or for anyone at UNCW. You have to try and mess things up at UNCW. UNCW is a popular destination for female high school students from the Northeast and the Atlanta area; yield decent in-state for depth and you are flying. It wouldn’t be difficult to put together a non-scholarship roster that would be good enough to compete in that conference, and one that is partially funded with 9 scholarships should be playing for an NCAA bid every year. The fact that the program was competitive under Paul shouldn’t have been much of a surprise as he went above what was required to be just competitive. Quality players want to go to UNCW. Putting together a roster just to qualify for playoffs should be an easy task. Making the playoffs will be good enough. This job is perfect for the individual that doesn’t make much of an effort, and minimal effort should be just enough to keep the person in the job.
I don’t know how the scholarship funding is at other schools in the CAA but it would be tough to compete with only 9 scholarships available if a majority of the schools have more money available.
Really not sure I agree with this take. Who from Atlanta of quality is seeking out Elon or UNCW? Also, I like the schools but they have to fund their programs beyond just the scholarships. Neither of these two “feel” they care about women’s Soccer.
Just an FYI. Burke walked into a veteran team of seniors and juniors. She never met any of them prior to preseason and didn’t recruit a single one.
Cool. It’s still impressive how quickly the coach that replaced Burke dragged the program downhill. UNCW should be good. You have to try to fail there. If the new coach doesn’t consistently at minimum have them in postseason most years that is a failure. Previous record wouldn’t fill anyone with confidence in him but maybe he will work it out.
Not easy. Doable, as Cairney demonstrated, but he did it with endless hustle. In addition to just the 9 scholarships, UNCW is also the only program in the CAA without a full-time second assistant, and has various other funding limitations. A beach location doesn't equal automatic success; just look down the road at the Charleston schools. You have to bust ass recruiting & a lot of coaches simply do enough to stay in a job & make bank at summer camps. That wasn't Cairney.
Come one. Hustle? Give 5 fulls to 5 stud internationals or American players. Take the other 4 and give out a very good 50% scholarship to 8 more players. Add a few decent walk-ones from instate. 15-16 good players. Why do women’s programs have between 24-30 players on a roster, when 15 get most of the playing time? It’s only a 2.5 month season? You make it sound very complicated.
For a fully funded program they ought to be a lot better than they have been. Word is they are looking to make an emergency hire (as in not post it online, which is generally state protocol), but still give a 4-yr contract. They made phone calls last week to the AD’s short-list.
*slaps forehead* Why didn't I think of that?? Are you under the impression a coach ever has his/her entire scholarship allotment available for a single class? And that those kids will all play for 4 years, with no injuries or transfers, and you just re-up with another magical class of '5 & 8' after they graduate? And your walk-ons are all happy with having zero chance of ever earning scholarship money through their play, which is a chance they would have at literally every other program in the country? And you don't mind resetting from a roster of nothing but seniors to a roster of nothing but freshmen every four years? And this is all assuming it was as easy as magically finding 5 stud and 8 very good players without doing any leg work (because, apparently, no hustle is needed), and there is somehow no competition for them, and you make the scholarship offers, and they accept. Oh, and a lot of programs are MANDATED to carry a minimum roster size, sometimes in excess of 30. And even if not, you need 22 healthy players to play 11v11 in training, which is a thing some coaches find helpful, since that's how the actual game of soccer is played. I'm being charitable when I say I don't think you have the first damn idea what you're talking about.
