Yeah, I'd be watching his possessions, his ability to take on guys 1v1, etc. Guys don't score on penalty kicks occasionally. That wouldn't weigh heavily into my evaluation.

I think Messi is the best player in the world, but he had a tournament to forget. An object lesson in the dangers of small sample size.

Yeah, though the sample is bigger if you're looking at every possession, and not something like goals. I just didn't see Lukaku do anything good that I can remember with a single possession. I'm sure that Messi would have had several good possessions and runs with the ball. Still, yes, with Lukaku I'm willing to accept that it was sample size issue and I just happened to get a bad sample. Besides, Belgium is a very good team, and it wouldn't make sense for them to have a crappy forward on it.

in the biggest comeback of this world cup. sure his first touch can fail him now and then, and sometimes he disappears in big games (wow it really sounds like jozy), but even tho rom left everton on a sour note, jozy isnʻt half the player lukaku is. heʻs bigger, stronger, faster, way more skilled.

I'll take your word for it, but I sure didn't see anything much that impressed me in the games I watched.

    Sample size, Jazzy, sample size!
40 goals in 74 appearances for Belgium, 135 top flight goals, mostly in the Premier League.

England blew chances in the first half that may have won the game for them, and then were caught napping defensively on the two Croatia goals.
Croatia's grit and determination won the day.

Well, I have no reason now to go out of my way to watch the final, however I will make a point of watching the third place match.

It took a shotgun blast after England lost so it's not functioning properly. :D

I'll go Croatia, because it's been a while since any non-"usual suspects" have won!

As the media applauds England for not embarrassing themselves at a major tournament for the first time in years, this video emerges:

A close up of the England players:
    https://i.imgur.com/oy0eBzI.gifv
    Spoiler: it’s Rashford and Lingard

Even if we were 100% sure this was legal, Lingard's pass put Rashford offside

What makes this extra funny is that Panama tried to do the same thing against England and were thoroughly mocked for it...

    video:

Reddit /r/soccer thread on the Panama incident
    Typical comments from that thread:
“Makes me wonder if they are really professional footballers :(

“do they not know the rules”

"You can't CONCACAF your way out of this one, Panama."

Well on the plus side of the French win, the US young guys tied them in their final WC warm up game. More reason to dump the entire US team and run with the younger players.
