ACC Conference schedule is comprised of 10 matches where the opponents are randomly selected. Sometimes the Duke ping pong ball doesn't come up for UNC. When it doesn't, the 2 schools will always play each other in a non-conference game...like last year. It is truly random selection.
This year, however, they are not playing each other in a counting non-conference game. Rather, they're playing in a pre-season exhibition game. (See Duke's schedule, which is published at its website.)
I now see your point. The UNC schedule is not finalized and still shows opponents in the Duke Classic as TBD. I was under the impression that UNC and Duke would play each other in the Duke Nike Classic. Maybe not.

Texas' schedule looks pretty weak to me: http://texassports.com/news/2018/4/18/soccer-announces-its-2018-fall-schedule.aspx
It is not at all uncommon for a Power5 conf school to have mostly home games, and I don't think Rice and UNC are easy for Texas. Besides, there is still an opponent to fill out at a neutral site, which could be another top flight program. Looking at all non-neutral site games, this table shows each conference's % of those games at home and also % of non-conference games at home. The teams are arranged in order from highest to lowest average ARPI. The data base is the last 11 years.
Talk about home-field advantage. Good grief: Texas a&m plays 14 of its 21 games at home, 1 at a neutral site and has 5 away games. It plays 10 of its first 12 games at home, including 8 in a row. I guess that is genius scheduling. And College Station is a tough away game for their opponents--the crowd is close to the field and of course you've got the military guys singing and beating drums or whatever they do from the beginning of the game 'till the end.
Looks like 12 home games, 6 away (5 SEC plus Hawaii), 1 neutral (Loyola Marymount), and 2 exhibitions. It is not at all unusual.
I was skeptical about "It is not at all unusual," but then I looked at Texas A&M's non-conference schedules for the 6 years they've been in the SEC. Over that time, I count 48 regular season non-conference games: 37 home, 2 neutral, and 9 away.
I believe they play eight straight non-conference home games. I'd say that is unusual. Hey, they've got a good scheduler.
