On paper it certainly looks that way after getting shellacked by Suriname, 13-2. BTW, does anyone know why Suriname (and Guyana) play in Concacaf rather than in Conmebol?
Suriname and Guyana are located on the continent of South America, but have always been more culturally oriented towards the Caribbean since colonial times. Like with Trinidad & Tobago, people of South Asian descent make up the largest ethnic group in Suriname and Guyana. Suriname also has a sizable group of people of Javanese descent. Other South American countries have a lot of Hispanics who are of Amerindian descent or European descent or mestizo. Obviously, Suriname and Guyana aren't Spanish speaking and they don't have many people of Euro or Amerindian descent either.
There ought to be a mercy rule enacted by Concacaf when some of these small Caribbean countries play. If they are losing by 10 or more goals in any of their matches at any point during the match, the referee ends the match. The winning team is awarded a goal differential of +3 for the match in question only. Quite honestly, these small countries are wasting their time as well as that of the serious teams'. They should not be allowed to participate if they are not going to field a competitive team. Moreover, the USA should not be in the same group as any of its territories. The USA is essentially playing against itself.
So a 9-0 win is worth three times as much as a 10-0 win? That's a terrible idea, man. It's professional sports, teams get smacked around sometimes. Part of the game.
No, the USA should not be wasting its time against non-competitive countries like these. If the USA wants to get better, playing these irrelevant islands with a population of 6 people is not the way to do it.
