I agree. But stories like this and https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...s-targeting-3-4-starting-caliber-players-2019
leave me thinking that, like the legend of the shark, you stop moving you die. I will note, however, that I once came upon what I was pretty sure was a sleeping shark while snorkeling.
Bu the pace with which MLS is improving probably means we have to get better to be as good, and while I wish it were so, getting older doesn't make us a year better anymore.

Yep. I think most of us recognize that the 17-18 squad is much better than the trophy winning 11-13 squad. Just like the 02-03 squad was better than the double-winning 2000 team.

It was a lot easier to recover when the league was 10-12 teams. Now with 24 in 2019 and 26 in 2020, there's enough of a bell curve where the better organizations will separate themselves off of the top.

There is no time for rest in MLS anymore. That's how a team gets left behind. I think Peter knows that. But change isn't cheap.

Our problem is that we need more cap room. I don't think we've been cheap. We haven't gone in for a the $5m a year player, but we have nine players in the above max category, which is about as many as anyone. A bunch of teams only have 5.

Yep, we've heavily leveraged TAM and GAM. We did bring in a league expert on Salary Budget issues.

But we're facing the problems that most teams in the Salary Cap era of team sports have faced as the squad ages.

When do you cut/trade/push out a Roger, Graham, or Matt? It's brutal, but teams that don't make the right choices tend to choke themselves out. Unable to bring in the necessary reinforcements, or having to lose up and coming future talent because the money isn't there to give them the big raise.

It's a tough problem. How to make moves without either damaging the team's connection with the fans, or messing with locker room morale.

I don't envy the decisions that Peter and company have to make the next few off-seasons as our roster steadily ages out.

Honestly, I'm not sure signing Seth was a good decision. We can't re-sign everyone. I say that without knowing how much he re-signed for. If he took a pay cut, then bully for us, and thanks to him. But if we gave Seth a raise and extension at this point, what does it say about our choices moving forward?

It's the Buddy Biancalana Test. Do we re-sign the 0.188 hitting shortstop because he had a hot post-season and became a fan favorite? Or do we realize that a 0.188 hitting shortstop isn't a necessary piece to building a championship team regardless of how many clutch hits he had over a three week period. The Royals failed that test in 1986.

In the Red Wings 1990s heyday, Scotty Bowman had the magic touch. Seemingly replacing two top-6 fowards and a top-4 defender every year. But he was an anomaly.

Hopefully it doesn't take a total crash and burn to rebuild the top end of the roster.

Why do I get the feeling Vermes wasn’t happy with the defense last season?

Because past our starting four, we were not looking great. Fontas and this guy are direct upgrades over Didic and Amor. That gives me some hope.

This is a signing that really makes sense; a young national team guy with size and talent. Looks like PV is leveraging his Hungarian connection to help the back line. I also have a suspecion this means that Ike may get that transfer he was looking for......

Just to throw this out there ... Barath has been listed as the starter 3 times for Hungary in the Nations League (2 wins and a draw) Group C ... they are not getting promoted to Group B though after finishing 2nd in the group. I did not watch the games, so I don't know if the "listed lineup" are correct, but he was listed as a Right CB in a 3 man backline twice ... and a RB on a 4 man backline once.

Just to feed that 3-5-2 potential. If Vermes can figure out a way to get squad rotation through the season an potentially switch from a 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 based on personnel available and who needs rest ... it could help us through the season. If he thinks he has 4 "starting level" CB's it would be a first. Graham Smith would be a 5th that's likely "break in case of emergency" though. Barath's "youth" in the group is also nice to see.

25 roster spots filled to date with an MLS draft coming up in a few weeks.

So now we lose a striker and get another winger. Does that mean SKC has another big striker signing up their sleeves? Rowe is a good player, but not a big enough impact signing that is going to change their fortunes on the offensive side of the ball.

Wow, did not see that coming. There must be a new striker coming in because you can’t make that trade with the hope you can find a striker in this window.

I got criticized earlier in this thread right after the loss to Portland for thinking the striker position was a problem (along with a leaky defense). Well, both of the previous starting strikers are no longer with the club. Obviously PV was thinking the same thing because now SKC must be having talks with a potential big signing since Nemeth really hasn’t proven himself to be the answer.

Unless PV really believes in Nemeth as CF, perhaps with a tactical tweak to help get mire from nemeth without losing the juice we get from Russell and Salloi.

Right. What part of Hurtado's history indicates that he's a bunch of goals waiting to happen? At best he's another Jacob Peterson - and that's frankly not good enough.

The Rubio trade makes me second guess the Hurtado trade. When he was "3rd string" I was okay with the trade b/c he wouldn't be expected to play as much behind Rubio and Nemeth. Now with Rubio gone I don't see what's there to think Hurtado can be our primary back up at center forward.

Part of Vermes's schtick is finding diamonds in the rough. But I think it's getting harder and harder to buy low/sell high.

For every Benny Feilhaber we get, how many Bobby Convey, Brad Evans, Justin Mapps... do we have to deal with? Strikers don't usually get really hot and score a bunch of goals when they come to KC, that's (Gomez, Kamara) do after they leave.

And if Nemeth really is the answer, what the hell was he doing with splinters in his ass all Fall and in the playoffs?

    Yikes. I'm actually kinda devastated.

I want to believe in Nemeth, I really do. I just... I just don't know.

I kind of understand the move from a business perspective but I'm skeptical with how it'll work out. I had hoped Nemeth would come back to the team and light things on fire but he just seemed to have a shit attitude for the few minutes he was on. I still have hope that he can be a good player at SKC but he's got some work to do.

He doesn't need to score a ton of goals. I am hoping we'll be scoring by committee again next year with all three on the front line and hopefully a rejuvenated Guti throwing some in as well.

We would have had to pay Rubio a bunch more after next season and we're gonna be paying Nemeth a ton of money to sit on the bench again? This is a way for the team to get something for Rubio and make some cap room while doing it.
