Because the CBA says that you can't be a free agent and earn more than the max. People may not like it and may think it is dumb but it is what the league and players agreed to. And I doubt either side want to make an exception or write up an amendment to the CBA so MLS found a way to get him a better salary than he could have through free agency. If people want to be mad at MLS for finding a loophole in order to get a player BETTER pay then I can't stop them, but MLS did right by Alonso by finding a way around the CBA restrictions when they didn't have to.
