http://www.espnfc.us/world-cup-qual...-to-host-us-costa-rica-wc-qualifier-on-sept-1 Though it was initially reported a while ago, here's the confirmation that Red Bull Arena is hosting US-Costa Rica on Sept 1. Fun Fact: This marks the first time all 5 hex matches have been played in SSS.
That's dead on arrival. No rational US player would ever accept playing in the middle of a war zone like Iraq. Their clubs would also flat out reject those callups and would raise a stink about it with FIFA. If I were the coach of the US, I would also decline it, because I would not want this to turn into a political circus that Trump or Congress would try to take credit for.
Iraq plays their "home" WCQs in Malaysia or Iran. According to ELO, Iraq's only home game in over four years was hosting Jordan in a friendly on June 1, 2017. Before that you have to go back to May 27, 2013. Their last home game that wasn't a friendly was a WCQ on September 2, 2011.
FIFA says the September 5 game at Honduras will start at 3:36 P.M. local, which is 5:36 P.M. Eastern.
2 qualifiers in October, and depending on how those go 2 friendlies or the 2 playoff games in November. That should be it for the year as those are the only FIFA dates, so we'd only be able to play camp cupcake style games outside of that, which usually doesn't happen til January.
So I saw someone post maybe speculatively that teams that have already qualified for the World Cup would love the US as a warm up opponent. Is that the type of games that are on the horizon for the US? I'm mainly just curious when the next friendly games are going to be since I'm hoping to see wholesale changes to the starting lineup with young players essentially.
Theoretically there could be a hastily-scheduled friendly or two in the November international window--usually a lot of those pop up once everybody knows who's not playing in WC playoffs. Then there is probably Camp Cupcake in January, and the only official FIFA window of the spring in March, before the pre-WC warm-up period after the European leagues conclude. The USSF has to provide content for its TV contract, and likely will be looking to get some money-printing games in some big stadiums. Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, etc.
The Portuguese Football Federation is reporting that the United States is playing Portugal in a friendly on November 14th. The link in Portuguese below from the federation.... http://www.fpf.pt/pt/News/Todas-as-notícias/Notícia/news/13617
Can confirm that #usmnt 's match vs. Portugal on Nov. 14 will be its only game during that international window.— Jeff Carlisle (@JeffreyCarlisle) October 18, 2017
Honestly... 57 caps, 2 world cups, and literally tens of thousands of dollars if not hundreds of thousands chasing the USMNT around the world for the last 16 years feels like a complete waste. What an utter disaster and embarrassment. Sadly, the Alexi Lalas rant was spot on the money.
Any word on the earlier November fifa date, either way? Is it looking like Portugal will be the only November friendly?
