Those were the days, Calvin and Hobbes, Gary Larson and a winning United, made walking to school 5 miles in the snow seem such a easy thing

OK - Then it's not a problem to give up 2018 Int'l Slot - and we're giving some team only some funny money.

Look closely- that's everyone except Hamid pulling at the oars in the forefront, that's Bill standing alone between #2 and #3 stacks

    Agreed - I don't really think it's that bad.

Not sure who's be coming back this summer that we'd need a #8 allocation spot for
the international spot would've been excess anyway.
$175k combined TAM/GAM seems a bit steep. Couldn't find how much we traded for Mullins and Sam last year, but I would just look at the $175k as equivalent to trading for someone in MLS. This was really our only loss of the trade

We can pick him up now rather than wait for the transfer window. Orlando was sitting at #5 in the order, with Larin sitting at 1.8 - although a few teams might have taken a swipe at him. If Houston hangs on for another month, the value of that slot goes up considerably. Taken together, we had to pay something of a premium. This wasn't true of Mullins and Sam.

The interesting thing to me is that we did pay the premium, one we didn't for Farfan or Ruiz. That's a pretty proactive move from this FO.

IIRC, everyone else passed on Ruiz before he fell to us.

Exactly. AFAIK, the team initiates it by saying "we want to bring on player XXX" Then everyone above that team in the allocation order gets a shot at him. So if you don't buy out the first slot, you're either really certain no one above you will make an offer, or you really don't care that much if you get them.

Meaning, we actually wanted this guy, which is a good sign.

Is it? I remember him being eminently mediocre in Colorado.

I want to know who would have taken this guy before us on the allocation list. If hes playing fro Tampa I doubt he was getting a look.

I suspect we'll find that describes him perfectly. He's not going to be pretty to watch.

He's a different kind of mediocre than Ortiz, though - at 6'2" and scary fast, he's the kind that defenses actually have to worry about getting behind them. I think we're getting a guy that will create space in between the lines for us, and maybe nip a goal or two in transition and on the early crosses Taylor used to be so dangerous serving up.

He's still alive. Although I suppose working for the Red Bulls is kind of like death.

He had 20 goals in 61 league appearances, which isn't mediocre at all IMO.

Realistically, in any given season, the 9th spot is worthless. It resets every season. Have there ever been 9 teams to use the allocation order?
That isn't to say I love this move. We're desperate. He's not likely to be awesome. He could be serviceable. What we really need is a couple of impact players. They would make the other guys around them better.

A goal every three games is better than any DCU player this year. If he nets 6+ goals the rest of the year, it's a good move.

Brings the 3 Stooges gag "Bread in Old Virginny, but only a crumb up here" to mind. Mediocre would be a huge improvement anywhere except the goal

Good move on Deshorn Brown. He was far from mediocre for my Rapids - we just seem to give away any actual goal scorers - and experience in Norway & China has improved his game - was in St. Pete a month ago and saw him score on a nice bike for the Rowdies.

The big positive is we likely didn't overpay for him. That would be a first for a DC midseason acquisition.

Overpay in terms of assets? Or in terms of money? Because according to Goff, Brown's salary is high enough if he makes it to 2018 that it will need to be paid down with TAM.
