Only 3 MLS games this weekend due to the international break. Also, this weekend marks the start of both NASL and USL, along with VAR testing in select USL matches. http://www.proreferees.com/2017-nasl-regular-season-assignments---week-1.php http://www.proreferees.com/2017-usl-regular-season-assignments---week-1.php VAR Schedule: https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2017...t-25-live-video-assistant-referee-experiments
The first match takes place this Saturday, March 25th, however the PRO website does not list a VAR. Richmond Kickers v Harrisburg City Islanders City Stadium (5:00pm ET) REF: DANIELLE CHESKY AR1: Jeffrey Skinker AR2: Ben Pilgrim 4TH: John Griggs Sometimes the commentators (for broadcasted matches) get a list of officials they read off, and they may make a point to announce the VAR since it will be one of the first few official uses in the US.
Second penalty for New England was a debatable call. The contact actually occurs outside of the penalty area, so it should have been called a free kick. Also, the New England player deliberately initiates the contact-the Minnesota player isn't even looking at him-so maybe shouldn't have even been a foul. This is a cynical move to block a run by an attacking player without the ball. The defender's reaction tells you everything you need to know. He is not arguing the call; he is claiming the foul is outside the area. Commit a foul that close to the line, and you are taking your chances. I have not seen enough evidence to convince me that the referee was wrong.
It's very close. There's a good, ground-level angle that seems to indicate the foul was maybe inches outside the area, but it could easily have been inside or on the line.
the MNUFC players foot is on the line when the contact was made. Aren't the line that make the boundary still part of that area. Or did the IFAB change that also
Watching the game live here in Minnesota, they showed a very close-up shot that showed that the contact was a few inches outside of the area. Not a terribly bad decision to call a PK, but correct decision would have been a free kick.
Felipe of the Red Bulls goes another week getting away with stuff most of the other players don't. Check Simon Borg's video where he goes in studs-up into someone's calf in the 3rd minute. The second half saw two retaliatory fouls by RSL against Felipe in the second half that were cautioned.
