FYI Portland vs Seattle has been pushed back 6 hours to 10pm EDT due to expected extreme heat.

Ted Unkel doing well in another game with two red cards. One for each team this time.

Yeah, somehow I think these two will generate significantly less criticism.

True, but one can't help but wonder what would have happened if there wasn't retaliation to the retaliation. Was Blanco getting sent on his own? And, if he was, what would have the reaction and criticism from fans been then?

why was there a delay in the red card though? They were both on the ground right in front of him and he appeared to see the whole thing

Because showing cards to players on the ground is considered a dick move and should only be done if the situation requires it, such as to prevent escalation. No need here as Unkel was right on top of it and was able to assure everyone he had the situation under control, and he did!

Going down after committing a foul is a common tactic to try and manipulate the referee and/or the crowd. "Because it can't have been a foul if I got hurt doing it!" We all know this is incorrect, but not all fans are that sophisticated.

If he shows the card with the offender on the ground, there will an above-the-fold photograph in tomorrows sports section claiming how biased the referee is. It is bad optics and costs us nothing to wait. The key is to stand there with it in the hand, so there's no doubt about what you're going to do once they get up. This placates the other side.

but the video appears to show the MN player standing around apparently well after the play with his teammates and the red card comes out for him only after what appears to be info from the 4O or ARs

    Not what happened.

Unkel is there, sees both players and see the misconduct. Blanco stays down an the Minnesota player moves away. Unkel calls medical staff onto the field to tend to Blanco, then goes over to show the red card to the Minnesota player. Later, when Blanco gets up, he gets red, too.

Unkel was also reaching for the red immediately after the retaliation. He may or may not have needed confirmation of Blanco's kick, but he was certainly going to at least suspect it if he didn't see it properly. Chances are he had it all the way without need for assistance and simply chose to defuse the situation by acting calmly and deliberately.

Waiting was also really smart, as it ensures both players aren't in the tunnel at the same time.

Giovinco's caution was rather interesting. I think it's easy to argue that should always be red.

Kelly did a great job keeping the temperature down in the 2nd half as the Red Bulls were getting frustrated in their derby match vs NYCFC.....until the final play of the game:

    https://matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/m...ulls-vs-new-york-city-fc/details/video/108185

As soon as the ball is played upfield, you know Lawrence is going to take this guy out with a frustration foul and has him lined up. Since the 4 minutes of stoppage was up, I would have liked to have seen Kelly blow the whistle and end it there since the Red Bulls were still harping about calls even in stoppage time and nothing good was going to happen. To me, this is a red card.

Also, In the 1st half, NYCFC tries a quick free kick from 40 yards away which drills Felipe in the back/side who was only a few yards away and Kelly orders a retake. Not ceremonial...why is it a retake (ball was not moving from what I recall)?

I was at the Minnesota-Portland game, had great seats 9 rows up from midfield. The situation occurred right at midfield so I had a pretty good look at it. Unkel went for red right away for Danladi, still had red in his hand but waited for Blanco to stand before showing him the red. He handled it perfectly and made the right decision on this play.

I see Petrescu's bar for serious foul play is still absurdly high.

I mean, I don't think I'm exaggerating saying that was a potential leg breaker.

Petrescu just missed a clear elbow to the ball on the box on Colorado. He should be very happy ATL is winning this game because he's screwed them twice now.
