MLSPU released a team-by-team list of salaries last month and it's interesting to compare to the 2015 numbers on the list:

It's interesting how little most teams' payrolls have changed. The lowest base spend is now close to 5 million versus around 3.5 million in 2015, however three teams were spending above 15 million in base salary back then versus only two this season. The median base payroll in 2015 was 5.2 million vs around 7.1 million this season. The average base payroll was approximately 7.3 million versus approximately 8.3 million this season. NYRB, was posting successful records despite having the lowest payroll in the league. Note that the lists do not include late or mid-season additions, so it's likely that NYRB and others spent more in 2015. NYRB is nearly double that number this season. LA Galaxy also have drastically reduced their payroll with the departure of most of their bigger names. They're still paying some big salaries which keeps them above 10 million but nowhere near the 18 million they were putting out before. Seattle's payroll has gone down slightly while Portland has nearly doubled theirs to move ahead of their rivals. Toronto FC is still, by far, the highest paid in the league, and has actually gone down slightly in it's base number since 2015; they've added Victor Vargas which apparently hasn't required a very significant addition to their salary figures which means that they've either added him on a very affordable contract or reduced salary elsewhere to fit him in. It might be interesting to note the "total compensation" numbers added to this year's figures which bump TFC's payroll by around an additional 200k. I often wonder what type of compensation packages teams are able to put together around the existing salary structure and by how much they're able to use these to bend themselves around the rules. I remember Beckham's salary, in particular, included alot of ancillary numbers outside of his official contract. Despite being a DP and not subject to restrictions, there were a lot of commercial incentives that LA Galaxy weren't on the hook for. TFC, in particular, has a few players like Cheyrou who would be high level non-DPs but still quickly take up existing roster space. They also have an increased number of homegrown players whose salaries aren't counted towards the cap thereby increasing their payroll that way. But their depth is interesting... it would be nice to see a breakdown of each player's salary on each team to see what might be TAM or GAM or what might be coming from GA or HG designations.
