This is Bruce, the MLS's choice for manager, we talking' about now! Even if he wanted to.....When is he going to try those guys out? He's got no more chances unless he throws a couple of friendlies in Europe in the schedule somewhere, but I don't know when that would be.
Camp Cupcake should be dedicated, this next year, to taking a serious look at "non-lock" candidates for the USMNT. The difficulty, obviously, is that for too many of the Euro based players the season is in full swing. Maybe the best scenario is to make priority of qualifying for one of the top three WCQ positions as soon as possible and maybe have a game or two that can then be dedicated to a serious look at these players...after all, those are FIFA sanctioned events.
Remember that Arena is quoted as saying, "Players on the national team should be–and this is my own feeling–they should be Americans. If they’re all born in other countries, I don’t think we can say we are making progress.” So his pool of European based players may be much smaller than we might think.
Horvath has had looks. The next in line for a look may be Jon Klinsmann, but after the Cup if he establishes himself. If Jon starts at Hertha, he starts for the USMNT. That may take a while but as of today he's positioned better than most. Euro field players who should garner some attention in camps if they are getting minutes: Danny Williams Alfredo Morales Emerson Hyndman Julian Green Aaron Johannson If Danny Williams is playing well, he's a no-brainer. He fills a need. It's him vs. Acosta for Jones' spot if Jones falls off. Same goes for Aaron...if he's getting minutes and playing well you bring him in.
theres gonna be plenty of more games to try players out....its a year away! if newbies like acosta and arriola can start wcq's then players who havent been integrated yet have plenty of time
When? We have qualifiers coming up this fall then the WC draw. Euro leagues will be in full swing and once the draw is made there will be few international windows until just before the World Cup. BA's January camp will be all domestic players. I don't see it. If he wanted to try Euro based players, and it is not clear than he does, he would and should have done it now.
As a 24 year old central defender Brooks is still learning the trade and he is learning it in one of the best leagues in the world. Miazga will make some of same mistakes nearly every young defender makes.
When Brooks is having a bad day, he's really, really terrible. He can be awesome too. But it's a risk.
Funny. I view USA defenders the same way I view women I have dated in the past. Some are too Old, Some are too inexperienced/ Naive, and some look better on tv than they appear in person.
