Of course Gomes looks solid when there's nothing to gain. Look next time when he's in a position to help Barca, and fcks it up purposefully, I've seen this so many times in both defense and offense.

There was a trophy at stake. It may not be a trophy you or I are much interested in but for the players on the pitch fighting for recognition any and every trophy is worthy. Plus, the match was against city rivals Espanyol.
It's easy for people (and I include myself in this group) to downplay situations when we are not the ones running and sweating it out on the pitch.

I don't rate Gomes as a player to rely upon either, but he was in the game as the DM, the Busi role, with no Raki by his side, no Iniesta either (he had Denis and Carles Alena who all played well) and behind he had no Umititi and Pique but Mina and Cuenca then Costas from Barca B (who again played well). But the point was he actually held things down fairly well in a position he rarely plays for us, next to teammates he has rarely partnered with. Does it mean I want him to start today? No, it does not. But it showed some potential, and perhaps pointed to a role where he could be more effective. Anyways, I am not a Gomes fan, just giving a small modicum of credit to him (he was only the 5th first teamer I mentioned and about the 13th player since I credited all of the Barca B players first.

While I'm here I'll also point out that I don't think Gomes purposely screws up, which you state. That would be pure lunacy for him and his career and to me is the sort of conspiracy theory that is easily dismissed. I do think that he seems to struggle in high pressure situations at times and would be better off at a lower profile club as a result. An eternal problem there is that most lower profile clubs cannot afford his wages, much less paying us at least 50% of the transfer fee we paid.

It's different with Gomes, I've seen him slowing down in defense, and allowed opposition to get on clear chance. I did mention that when it happened, should've recorded it as an example. It was weird, as is his crosses which go million miles off.

HM Suarez (great movement, passing, distracting defense), Iniesta (came back when needed), Roberto (see Iniesta, not that I ever doubted he'd play), Pique (another rock at CB, between him and Umtiti it was a Baresi world cup final worth of shot blocks, tackles, interceptions), Paulinho, Gomes, Vidal came on and kept the pressure on.

Umtiti may actually be the best center back in the world right now. I don't think that is exaggeration.
